Just did this. Holy cow, what a difference. Feels worlds better and much more natural, even mechanically.

I was amazed at how "soft" the clutch pedal feels now in comparison to before. I'm assuming this is normal?

My clutch is now parallel, maybe a mm or 2 above my brake pedal. Plenty lower for me. It's amazing being able to slide my left foot from dead pedal to clutch now with just raising heel slightly whereas before it was completely raising leg. lol.

This is exactly the reason I need to adjust mine. Thanks!

I'd suggest anyone wishing to make this adjustment read through the entire thread before committing so you know everything you might encounter. There were plenty of things I'm glad I knew before making the adjusent that I learned from this thread. You'll discover some on your own, but don't work harder than you need to.

I read through all 18 pages lastnight (granted, it was at like 2AM lol) and recalled reading that a softer clutch pedal would be a result.

Just wanted to make sure.

Just did this on my 14 BRZ and it is sooo much easier to drive smoothly! I've currently got the clutch slightly above the brake, but will probably mess with it some more once it warms up. It engages pretty close to the floor now, but I'd really like no free play as I'm coming off the floor (only a couple mm of free play right now). Definitely recommend any 86 owner to do this asap!

where should the free play be? at the beginning when you depress the clutch pedal, or at the end as you depress it fully?

i have free play at the end of the pedal toward the floor. no free play when i first go to step on it.

i have been smelling my clutch burn, but I've been attributing that to the new car smell.

"Both" in the preceding post is correct.

If your clutch begins to engage just off the floor; the pressure and friction plates don't have enough clearance. Clearance is necessary to keep the clutch from partial engagement when the clutch pedal is fully depressed.

Free play at the top is necessary to keep the throwout bearing from remaining in contact with the pressure plate. Such contact spins and wears the throwout bearing. Heat build-up can also transfer to the diaphragm spring used on most conventional clutches. Excessive heat can result in less plate pressure end eventually; a slipping clutch.

Bottom line for me: clutch engages about an inch from the fully depressed position. Can depress clutch pedal about an inch against spring pressure before the hydraulics engage. Result: I have reasonable clearance between the pressure and friction plates when the clutch pedal is depressed. The throwout bearing does not contact the diaphragm spring on the pressure plate when the clutch is released = a healthy clutch over the long term.

Remove the helper spring if you want to get rid of the "softer" clutch feel, totally beefs up the stiffness with it gone.

This is the easiest DIY!!! I spent more time reading and watching the DIY guide than actually adjusting it. It took less than 2 mins. No joke. Thanks a bunch guys!!!
So well worth that effort.

Does this have any other effect other than "stiffening" the clutch feel?
