Generally a hatch means a lot of rear window glass, which I thought could get pretty heavy

Then again, I guess there's always lexan

i'm pretty certain a hatchback does not add rigidity in and of itself. maybe they reinforce cars that are hatchbacks (read: extra weight) to make up for the hatch. i still vote couple w/ trunk.

What about weight -- or is it difficult to make a direct comparison because of other structural differences between hatch and coupe?

For example, I think the Civic hatch is a bit lighter than the coupe variant, but as a general rule, I was under the impression that hatchbacks tend to be a bit heavier -- am I mistaken?

Of course, if it helps plant the rear wheels (on a FR), that isn't all bad...

i once owned a 2002 WRX wagon, which was 80 lbs heavier than the sedan, almost entirely due to the extra glass the hatch needed. but i think some of ya'll are thinking about an RSX style hatch, which I can't think would be much heavier than the coupe alternative.

Well as far as I know, as long as it looks like it could have a regular trunk, like the Scion tC, the hatch doesn't add much weight. In general a hatchback is heavier due to the extra glass and mechanics to hold it up, but if Toyota were to maintain the body style of the FT-86, the hatch wouldn't add much weight. The advantages then of having a hatch, besides the obvious versatile trunk space (if they used fold-able rear seats), is that suspension bars can be added to the interior frame of the car. Classic examples are the EG Civics with the interior cross bars that hold onto the hatch. Then you would have a much stiffer frame then compared to a regular coupe. Besides on a personal note, hatches look much better, especially to those that plan to out fit the car with a full audio setup.
