The only "major design change" I would not have a problem with is switching to a MR layout from FR. Would definately make for an interesting drive, though it would mean the end of the rear seats. A problem for some, a blessing for others. Are there currently any MR cars with a flat/boxer layout?

Looking around it seems the only car to use a flat layout with midship mounting is the Porsche Boxster/986/987. But it is a flat 6 and considerably more expensive than the 86 is projected to be.

No, it's rear-mid engine. Engine does not sit behind the wheel, but actually front of the wheels. Here's the blueprint of '06 Cayman S (987)

As you can see, it's pretty much mid engine... but Porsche engineers are calling it rear-mid engine. Those weird Germans. lol

They call it that because they have stayed with a rear engine in the 911 and then pulled the cayman out of nowhere and it is very competitive with the 911 if only the engineers were given free reign i wonder how much better it would be

Only thing I know is, I don't ever wanna work/fix 911 or cayman, never ever. Looking at the blueprints already giving me a headache.

just call it mid engine. there's no such thing as "front mid engine," no matter what the fanboys say. mid engine = engine behind the driver and in front of the rear axle. front engine = engine anywhere in front of the driver. /discussion

I would not agree, the engines placement in relation to the axels is the best way of describing a particular layout.

Mid engine is anywhere between the front and rear axles.

Yes, cuz you had all the tools you need to work on it. I think, you'll think differently if you had to work under the sun w limited tools (no lift, no power, just pure muscle). I've pulled out several of my friends engines (Toyota, Nissan, Subaru & Honda. All 4cyl) & fixed/tuned them w just few tools, cuz most of them was made to it like that (specially Honda's)... but Porsche is totally different, you gotta have the right tools & lift, you can't work on them... at least, that's what I think anyways.
