I'll probably go with 18" in the end though.
Now just change out the cheap looking headlights with some HIDS and this is the perfect FR-S!

I will probably go with 18" too though but some nice Volk TE37SL in 18X9.5

Would there be any performance improvement beyond potential handling in the lowered springs and lower profile rubber? Wouldn't the body kit and heavier (?) wheels hurt agility?

Looks like Heavyweight Stage 1 to me..

Coming from an Autocrosser perspective, lowering the car has 2 effects. On one hand, it does lower your center of gravity minimizing weight transfer and body roll through corners. But you have to keep in mind, by lowering the car, you're also changing the geometry of the suspension. So it may or may not help with handling depending on what you've done to the car.

Your also correct about weight. Any more weight on the car and you'll decrease your power to weight ratio and hurt acceleration overall. But it totally depends on where the weight is. In my opinion, heaver wheels are worse then a body kit. The reason why is because the wheels will add more to "unsprung weight" and the weight will be at the corners of the car. The body kit adds to "sprung weight" meaning that its weight carried by the suspension. The wheels are not carried by the suspension and effect the car more in terms of balance.

But, that being said, a larger wheel diameter allows for a wider rim. In autocross or any form of road racing, you typically want the widest rims you can get because the wider the rim, the wider the contact patch is on the road. IE, you can put a 225 tire onto a 7 inch rim. But it would work better on a 7.5 inch rim simply because that extra half inch makes the contact patch bigger.

EDIT: I should also mention that by increasing the size of the wheel, you will decrease your final drive ratio of your transmission. This is not really a good thing because it takes more effort from the engine to move the car forward from a stand still. In reality, the best wheel to choose for racing is the smallest diameter wheel which clears your brakes and the largest width. For me, this would be something in the 16inch range with hopefully 7.5 inchs of width or larger.

A lower profile tire simply reduces "flex" in the sidewall of the tire. Overall this won't really do much except for make the ride a little more harsh. Most people I've seen who Autocross never use low profile tires. The 2 common tires I've seen people run are the Hankook RS-3's or Toyo R1R's. Everyone says the Toyo's are the best.

Also, compare a Toyo R1R in 205 size to a RS-3 in 225 size and they are almost exactly the same. I don't understand how but the Toyo's seem large compared to others.

Really? Who the hell cares if someone else puts 19's on their FR-S. It's available for them to do that, quit whining already..geesh!

I will be curious to see how many fusing over it, are actually going to be tracking their FR-S since they keep screaming about the weight of the wheels.

And the 19 on a 200hp car? Makes since..IF you plan on leaving it at 200hp, which most will not.

Really? Did you even read the guys post?

He asked what sort of performance benefits lowering springs would have and if larger wheels will hurt agility. I answered him in the best way I know how.

And yet you somehow think I told him not to put 19inch wheels on his car? Did I specifically say this? No.

If he wants to put 19 inch wheels on his car, I don't care. But he asked a question about performance and I answered it.

For the record, you can have 4 17inch wheels which way the same as 5 15inch wheels. In terms of racing, you tell me which size is better for weight purposes! I know this because I've done a pile of reseach for wheels and Autocrossing. For the longest time I was going to Autocross a new Ford Fiesta.

Yep, CF fenders and the PTuning decal is semi-new, but not around here anymore. Going to get my dated carbon re-clear coated, and then she will be pic worthy of some close ups
