The thing that I don't understand is that there are some people who are willing to pay that mark up. And yes, one is paying approximately 6k extra for re-badged Brembos.
From the limited reading I have seen the only product sold by TRD for the 86/FR-S which is not a re-badge is the airbox and some chassis bracing.

More like a $3-4k markup. The price in Japan isn't $10k+, we just get the shaft because of shipping and such. They aren't the same exact kit as the Brembo GT Kit. But you should already know that TRD label does command a hefty markup. Not that I'm saying spending 8-9k on a BBK is worth it. Just getting the facts straight. I'll be getting an AP Racing BBK. Way cheaper and lighter. Still not cheap lol but compared to the TRD kit, it is. This sucks for those that bought the kits. "Sorry our SS lines sucked, here's some rubber ones." Note that they issue the voluntary recall to replace stainless hose with not a new stainless hose, but a rubber hose. If there was an issue with the fittings they specified I imagine there'd be a new stainless line - the replacement with plain rubber hoses is either:
That should put doubt in the minds of all users of stainless lines, IMHO. |

All this shit about TRD being expensive, and if you have it you must be an idiot; is a joke.
Just because it's expensive in the US, doesn't mean it is elsewhere. In NZ, we get the TRD 86, and with that, better access to TRD parts, ie better pricing. Heres some examples (an imported item, I have obviously included GST (NZ sales tax, and import duty) All prices are NZD. TRD Kit is $9k NZD AP Racing Endurance is about $4k landed. Remember thats fronts only. Wilwood kit is $3k per end. So $6k for total setup. Alcon's are $9k. They're front and rear. Now TRD are factory supported. This means that: 1: You can include it as an upgrade on your car when you buy it, and finance them 2: They are not considerd a modification by your insurer. Many people (certainly over here) have policies like this 3: They are included in your factory warranty. Some of us here have 5 years unlimited kms and serviced. That means they also pay for your BBK consumables during this period. 4: They are not considered a modification by the authorites. All brake upgrades listed above require an immediate certification, this is $500 and a fucking pain in the ass. Dont get it, you're rolling illegal. TRD dont need this, as again, factory part. 5: Some people take great security in buying factory supported parts. Sure, their might be a premium. But they designed the car; they going to find it a lot easier to develop parts for it. Many people would trust TRD, over forum opinions. FWIW I don't have the TRD BBK, but I can certainly understand why those that opted for the upgrade did so. Also keep in mind, that in 2012 there was little knowledge about other options. Hopefully this puts it in perspective. Lesson to learn, not everyone looks just at the $ side. Don't get butt hurt because you can't justify it. |

The point I was making is that some people can justify the purchase, without doing so just to impress others.
Before my post, the only opinion was that trd brakes=idiot. |

Well, I have TRD everything, incl TRD model with BBK. And almost every other TRD part.
The TRD BBK is my favourite part. Look great and f'n unbelievable on track. I collect TRD parts like others collect sneakers. Each to their own and if I want to waste my money on a label then that's my choice. No different from buying a fashion label rather than the equivalent cheaper version that looks the same. TRD bling is my thing. We all have our vices.

Way I see this is there might be isolated occurrences when people beat on their brakes and the weak links are the lines or connections OUTSIDE the SS braided lines that are bursting. If so, that means theoretically ANY SS line you put will cause failure if you beat on your brakes the same way because of a faulty brake fluid delivery design inherent to every car, not to the TRD brake lines. Basically, this car is not SS brake line friendly unless you modify the fluid delivery system up and/or down the chain to match the rated pressure of your SS lines. And the way TRD resolved this is to load the pressure more evenly [equalize] across the delivery system with replacement rubber lines. Again, this is assuming the SS lines cause more strain on non-SS components.
