Well, thank ya AznKirby ..... since you ask, I'll relate more of ......the story.

Modifications, you ask .... well heck YES! However, most "mods" consisted of replacement parts. I had two sources; a junk yard on down the road and a auto parts store in town.

The junk yard is where I would get parts like drive line parts, fuel pumps, generators etc. I would help the old coot, who owned the junk cars, move stuff around for a few hours (he had a bad back) in trade for parts. Yep, 100% guarantee on parts (if they didn't work, I could exchange them for another).

For "new" parts, like spark plugs, ignition points, condensers and carb kits, I would sweep floors and help stock parts in the auto parts store till I worked enough to "pay" for the parts.

......and, folks it was uphill both ways to the junk yard and into town to the parts store ....

I remember laying in the mud and snow, pulling an axle out ...... but, that's another story ..... I got to go eat my oatmeal ....

I worked busing tables at bars, fixed broken neon beer signs to sell on craigslist, and installing parts on friends of friends cars for extra cash, but i feel that's only a 'story' compared to current generation of kids. Your stories are so cool, but I'm sure probably normal for you and your friends. This is why shows like Ice Road Truckers, and Deadliest Catch are so popular, nobody actually works anymore and we are so amazed when people actually do something more than sign a loan paper for whatever they wanted. Probably, but I'm saving for it now. I have no reason to move out alone and spend $1700+ a month and struggle when I don't mind living at home, and parents don't mind either.

Also, I'm rarely home..work 10-12 hour days during the week and go out of town occasionally, and weekends I'm out usually.

I'm 20 and working 45+ hours graveyard, go to school, and live 100% on my own. I hate when people at my work who are older then me ask me how much my parents how much they pay a month for my car. It pisses me off more then anything.

I'm so glad to see other people my age work hard to get what they want.

A lot of old guys bitchin' You know the old story "walk to school barefoot in the snow, uphill both ways". The kid is paying for car! Cut him some slack! I would think that the type of people (old like myself!) that buy this car would agree that life is short and you need to have some fun! No sense in dying a grumpy old f*** that never did anything and regretted everything. My first car (at 17 I might add) was a 70 Chevy Malibu bought from my sister for $600 bucks! Would I rather have had a nicer car, hell yeah but at the time it was not in the cards. It is now!
Remember that life is short and having some fun is not a sin!

I'm 21 and I also work 40+ hours a week while going to school part-time. I'm proud to be paying it off myself and even modding it when I can. This car is more than worth it to me despite all the expenses that come with it.

I don't own a twin (yet), but for what it's worth I bought my first new car (06 tC) when I was 19 back in the summer of 2005. The job I had then had no limits on overtime so I essentially lived at work and saved up a good chunk to put down. I had no co-signer and back then when interest rates were much higher Toyota gave me the loan to the tune of 14% APR but required 1/3 of the value of the car as a down payment. I made the payments for about a year and refinanced with a local bank down to 5%.

Being older now (28), the only thing that worries me when I see younger adults driving nice/new cars is that they are more likely to do something foolish simply because of the lack of experience. 200hp is still enough power to wrap yourself around a tree.

Also worth noting, I was paying ~$300/mo for the car back then, and another $200 or so for auto insurance. Now I drive an 09 tC (paid for), and spend ~$45/mo for insurance. It's mind boggling what a difference age, credit score and income can have on your insurance rates.

24 and living on my own since I was 19. Luckily I had a $20k car from my parents when I was 17 so I've been using that trade equity to stay financially green while I went through college. Put $2k down on this car and that cash flow is gone. Corporate entry job now and couldn't be happier.

24. Bought my car in late December. Put a $10,000 down payment (bank account currently at $11.07); money I'd saved up from substitute teaching the prior year. Traded in my 2006 camry that was originally a company car and passed down to me. Managed to get $7,750 for it! Currently paying $229 for 36 months with 1.9% APR. No way I'd be able to buy the car if I had to pay insurance, so my parent's gratefully put me on their policy. Still subbing, trying to get a permanent job.

Remember when you had a substitute teacher and would do whatever you want during class? Being on the flipside of that sucks. A shout-out to all the substitute teachers who I made their visit awful.
