As for the car, I'd second the earlier E36 M3. Just buy a good one.

Great DD. I never drive the BRZ anymore. It's kinda pointless to own for me now so I'm seriously considering selling it
dont get me wrong, i would kill for a sc mr2. i still check craigslist from time to time despite owning five cars with no space.

are there decent examples of the e36 in that price range? i always kinda wrote them off because i assumed that price and maintenance would be excessive

Compared to their NA variants they are. They feel much more... Substantial. I still prefer the FI versions though.

Its like the Syclones and Typhoons. Awesome trucks...just hard to find because they are legitimately rare.
Good luck finding a gnx near 10. A ttype or gn maybe but not a gnx.

3rd gen MR2, if you don't need luggage space. You can get a clean 2ZZ + 6 speed swap for 8-9k. The 6 speed I'd say is pretty essential, the 2ZZ is nice because trying to just do a simple cam swap on the 1ZZ costs too much unless you can do it yourself. Chassis bracing is also nice since the thing flexes so much, that'll run you 500 for the full works.

Stock ones in good condition go from 5k-7k, and they/re still plenty of fun.

The problem with the gto would be no airbags and I wanted something that would at least be a little safe.

I can't find any E36 M3s near me is it all just a matter of patience and waiting or are they hard to find?

Yeah forward visibility is worse than the Twins. If you're average height or above, the headliner will start to get in the way. You eventually get used to it though. Helps to recline your seat. Rear visibility is compromised too, same reasons.

Side visibility is about the same as the Twins. No complaint there.

The ride quality is fine. If you're used to driving a BRZ/FR-S, it'll feel similar. Perhaps a bit more pucker over bigger bumps.

What??? They most certainly have airbags... Edit: After looking though, I don't think you can get a nice one for under $10k, at least in my area.

I'll fifth the RSX suggestion. RX8 if you're adventurous, pretty much the only lightweight RWD coupe available before the FRS.

S2000, Reliable and under $10k don't belong in the same sentence.
Yes you can get an S2k for less than $10k, but it will either be a salvage title or beat to within an inch of it's life. I wouldn't budget any less than $15k for an S2000 last I looked at the market.
