I wouldn't shift from 2nd to 1st when the car is moving. If you're going to stop, then stop and put it in 1st gear. If the car is moving, stay in 2nd gear.

Flush every 30K miles with whatever Toyota/Scion/Subaru recommends.

Pentosin or Redline MTL for tranny. Motul gear 300 in diff is fine year round...

Sell your car and get a stick shift, you're obviously doing it wrong

So, I want to change my tranny and diff fluid this month and I was going to go full Motul but after hearing about hard cold shifting I'm rethinking my choice. Now I'm thinking of Redline MT-85 :[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-50504-Transmission-Transaxle/dp/B004D4URV6/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top/186-2417182-7610908"]Red Line (50504) MT-85 75W-85 GL-4 Manual Transmission and Transaxle Lubricant - 1 Quart : Amazon.com : Automotive[/ame]

Do you think that's a good choice for the tranny or is the weight too low for our spec? I was also thinking of still using Mogul 300 for my diff, so if I bought 2 qts of each could I mix fluids by putting 2 qts of 85 in the tranny then top it off with the 90?

MT-85 is thicker than MTL, which several members are running in their transmissions without problems. I ran the MTL for a while without problems. Didn't like the way it felt so I went to Gear300. I wouldn't have a problem with trying the MT85 in my car, but I'm more likely to go with Pentosin the next time I change it.

Top it off with the Motul Gear300?
You could, but neither manufacturer is going to be OK with the idea of mixing someone else's oil with theirs. If there is a problem nobody will be able to help you without launching into a 30 minute diatribe about how they only have documentation on their own brand of oils. You could end up stumbling onto a mixture that does great things.

Top it off with redline MT90? Yes.

Top it off with redline 75w90 GL5? No.

Has anyone here tried just doing a flush and refilling with stock OEM fluid?

Pentosin is thinner than MT-85 right? I heard good things about it but I don't want to go out of spec really, hell I'm nervous about going down to 85 in the summer, it doesn't get crazy hot here.. I just want it to be ok on days bordering 100 F. I wonder if Motul's GL4/GL5 spec would mesh well with MT-85's GL4....

Yes, Pentosin is 75w80 like Redline MTL.

Been doing more research and have seen some great reports on Pentosin in our gearbox, still a bit worried about it being so thin, but if people are reporting great use even in the high 90s then I might be inclined to switch to that. I also heard of people using a Redline cocktail of MTL and MT-90, but I imagine it wouldn't be too different from MT-85 and I heard Pentosin is just a better product.
