Surprisingly, the audio quality went up a notch. The bass doesn't sound near as bad as with the stock HU. I'm starting to think that the stock sound system isn't really all that terrible in the audio department... it's just terrible and clunky in the DSP area, and the interface has much to be desired (but is leaps and bounds above the stock Clarion units Subies normally come with.... ). Mirrorlink audio just SUCKED previously. I'll have to see if it sounds cleaner now (doubt it, as before the USB and BT audio sounded just fine without the amp being turned on, but the mirrorlink audio just sounded.... crackly, like it was clipping the digital audio just a tad before it hit the DAC).

This new HU is definitely a VERY good upgrade (Sony XAV-701HD) for the price. But I wouldn't spend $500 on a new HU like this just to keep it wired to the stock audio system. I have a feeling I'm going to really like what better speakers, amp, and an actual subwoofer can do for this car. That's when this HU's DSP capabilities will come into play, I think. I've heard negative things about Sony's car audio products in the past, and I still wouldn't use their amps, subs, and speakers when there's much better available (same with Pioneer, though their Champion series amps can't be beat for the price they go for).
I'm just doing a little unofficial poll, what settings did you have on the stock HU out of curiosity? Natural, Hear, Feel, Treble, Bass? Made sure it was set to FR-S?

EDIT: Nevermind, forgot you were a BRZ. The FR-S head unit I feel is pretty decent, but it's easy to make it sound poor with different settings like you say.

It's all about what type of music you are listening to. Any digital/electronica tends to be better in Feel.

Anything of rock nature sounds better in feel or natural mode.

Technically, every different track could sound "better" with an equalization customized to the sounds In that track...for me it's finding the happy place for the given Artist

It doesn't look purdy but functionality wise I feel like the stock frs HU kicks ass. You can custom set your equalization also...nothing granular, but it equals out well for those who enjoy perfecting that sound balance.

P.s. I previously ran audio tech for dance and theater...I'm not a pro audio tech by any means but know enough to balance out systems, headphones, etc. I dig the stock setup as a whole. Also look forward to upgrading it ^^

heres some pics info on the plugs. This info was helpful when I installed a back camera to my aftermarket head unit.

I'm headed out to the 88 for a bit. It'll take me about 40 minutes to get there. PM if you want to join. I'm not going to go all out, just push myself a bit beyond my current comfort level.

(no, @Ninjin, I won't ask you to help pull me out of a ditch )

So, my own inexperience in truly driving fast is scarier than riding with @Ninjin or @nelsmar.

Well, that and my car still being on stock, slippery tires when the 88 was still really dusty.

I also really need to learn to heel-toe. Being on the clutch & off the brake trying to downshift when I need power for a turn is scary.

Downshift sooner and don't worry about heel toeing it. 88 is no proving grounds. Enjoy your ride and save technical stuff for track or autocross where a mess up is typically forgiving

I'm not trying to prove anything, I just want to get better & the 88 is still fun as hell.

I was downshifting sooner at times, but that caused me to go slower in certain sections.

Now, if the BRZ torque dip wasn't there, I'd probably just not change gears...

I figure, I get headers & get tuned & also get better tires, I'll be a bit better set.

I still need to practice handling corners & power correctly, though.

Practice makes permanent, not perfect.
