I am going to NCRC Laguna Seca on 7/28 and Thunderhill on 8/2-8/3. Excited! Well, a long way off.

This vid is 86 related so I'll post. From 12/15 @ Thunderhill w/ CityTech's advanced group. I'm driving my S2000 and battling it out with an ol' school AE86 which I was told had an F20c swap (s2000 engine). This car was pretty fast! These aren't my fastest laps of the day since I was still trying to dial out some under steer which I got right by the end of the day.

Also, for experienced GoPro users, can you make some recommendations to shoot a better video? I have the GoPro mounted on a custom s2000 mount over my right shoulder but is there anyway to zoom in a bit? Additionally, I have the dark setting on that looks like a dot on the screen. It's said to improve day videos shot from inside dark cars... does anyone use this setting? It'd probably help if I paid attn to my GF putting down the sun visor. LoL

Amazing how that ae86 took off in the straights with the s2000 motor. Great job on getting him and passing him at the end. Looks like he made you work for it a lot.

Agreed. He definitely had the power/weight ratio advantage over my stock engine S2000. He definitely put some gap me on the straights.

It looks like I had a traction advantage where my car was carrying higher cornering speeds. While I was fighting understeer and having to back off my entry speed (especially evident in turn 2-3-4) he was fighting his rear end breaking loose. Ultimately, I was able to catch and pass once we got thru the other traffic.

BTW, check out my buddy Dan's rediculously fast modified M3 on slicks running sub 2:00 laps!

Great video AyJay! Great driving, and yeah that AE86 had some tail wagging oversteer all over the place... Running at the ragged edge, haha.

It depends on what model of GoPro camera you have, but most of the newer ones have the ability to set the field of view between wide, medium, and narrow. If you record at the highest resolution, I don't think you can go narrow, but you can always edit and crop to a more zoomed in view using editing software like iMovie. Yes, the spot metering mode that you are using is the right mode to use when you're shooting inside the car with a wide enough angle to show both the interior and exterior. What it does is use the light metering based on the exact center of the image, so if you have it pointed to look out the window, it will expose for the outside view as opposed to the inside. If you use the normal mode in that situation, the camera tends to try to brighten exposure to reveal the details of your interior, which tends to be darker and therefore will overexpose the view outside the window.

Thanks for the tips PMok. I have the hero 3 black edition. Now that you mention it, I do remember the field of view settings you are referring to. I will take a look at those again to see if changing the setting makes it look like the camera is closer. Right now I think I have it set on wide. I'd like to be able to make a better video when I run the fr-s on 2/7.

Great driving AyJay! Way to go sticking with him.

How did you resolve your understeer - tires, stiffened the rear?

ok, I have the same GoPro as you. The narrower FOV settings are only available at the 1080p and lower resolution settings I believe. And yeah they will have the effect of looking more zoomed in. If you are recording at 1440p or higher it won't let you choose them.

I was able to tame the oversteer by playing with my tire pressures. I recently added aero to my car which completely changed the driving dynamics of it. Pre-aero w/ 255 squared tires i would tame oversteer with an adjustable front sway bar and higher front PSI in the tires (PSI tricks I learned from my AutoX days). Since the addition of the aero parts I had so much rear downforce I had to put my oem front sway bar back on and I've been still dealing with high speed understeer. Once i realized thru trial and error that I would probably benefit from running higher PSI in the rear than the front (something I've never done) then the car really felt neutral again. I dropped my lap time 0.8 sec just by adding an add'l 2 PSI in the rear.

I probably will have to do some more tweaking next time out. The car is over at Driving Ambition in Cameron Park right now getting improved front aero similar to what the run on their SCCA race S2k. My adjustable wing is completely flat right now and with better front aero I expect to be able to increase the Angle of Attack and get even more balanced traction and a lower lap time.

I think I'm going to register for NCRC's Thunderhill ASAP - anyone with a place to crash willing to let me throw a few bucks your way? I've got a sleeping bag and some mats I can sleep on, don't mind sleeping on the floor. Sigh.
