I have owned two VW's and they have been the least reliable vehicles I have ever owned. I would consider another one, but I would definitely wait a year or two to buy one to allow for them to work out the kinks. Especially with the GTI which is brand new to Mexico and a brand new platform on top of that.
Thank you so much for the information. German quality is bad enough, now made in Mexico ? Common....I was disappointed with Lexus Made in Canada already

Yep. This is correct. This is going to be interesting. Hopefully there will not be any difference in quality but we'll see.

It's hit or miss. Have had 2 friends with GTi traded in their cars within 2 years of buying it due to so many problems. Some others I know have been much better in terms of reliability.

Which is why I would recommend waiting awhile and see how reliability is. I bought a brand new 1999 VW Jetta VR6 that was made in Mexico and it was by far the least reliable car I ever bought (it qualified for lemon law).

I had a GTI that was rock solid for the first 24K miles and then the issues started fast and furious

It is hit or miss. I know guys that have almost 100K trouble free miles on their GTI's too.

But what you have to keep in mind is that once you get outside your warranty parts and labor for VW's is typically much higher than American, Japanese, Korean cars, etc.

On top of that I cannot believe how BADLY these things depreciate.
I got my car 2 years ago FULLY loaded with only 7kmiles on it.
Some idiot paid over $30k for this car brand new and the damn thing is now only worth $18k in flawless condition with only 25k miles on it.

This is the only reason I want the WRX over the GTI.

I work at General Motors (MERRRIICAAAAA').

We have suppliers for parts all across the globe. Out of all the suppliers, our Mexican friends have been by a long stride the least reliable. I'm not saying this would be indicative of VWs being made in Mexico, but just wanted to chime in since we have so many quality issues with parts made in Mexico.

I did the same thing with my fully loaded DSG 4 door TDI. Got it for a little over 19k 2 years old with 23k miles CPO. Paying for the 40k mile DSG service tomorrow

Yeah depreciation on VWs suck. Good thing I'm planning on keeping my GTI for a while -- at least the full 5 yrs of powertrain warranty. I'll re-evaluate after that.

Honestly though, I'm not too worried about any part except the DSG tranny, which is ridiculously expensive. Anything else that's likely to fail shouldn't cost too much to fix.

Assuming the R is available with a manual in the US (and as a 5dr) it will almost certainly be my next car. The dealer didn't know if the R would be Mexican made or German, but since the Mexican Jettas have been scoring better quality scores than the German ones for years now, I don't really care.

The Mk7 R is already available in the EU, they're 3,250 pounds, which certainly isn't all that impressive, but compared to the A45 and M235i, it's a lot lighter. I'd be 100% sold if it were closer to an even 3k pounds, but for a car with four actual doors and room for adults, there's just not much competition.

Why no one, Toyota/Subaru, Lexus, Hyundai or anyone else hasn't figured out how to build a 2,900-3,100 pound four door with rear wheel drive, or at least Haldex is still very vexing to me.

The initial 2015 R's will be built in Germany from a reliable VW source. At some point this will change and they will be built in Mexico, but for now the Mexican plant is not equipped to build the AWD Golf R.

Since Subaru killed the WRX hatch, the Golf R could be my next car in 3-5 years as well. I want the manual

I stand corrected on the GTI. My mother has a Passat CC. She has had essentially no trouble for about 4 years. The dealers treat her wonderfully, too. Her 135i convertible was lemon-lawed because of the injectors and fuel pump. With my last two E60 BMWs, I spent far too much time at the BMW dealers. They treated me well every time, but I was sick of seeing them. I do miss that V8 power and those huge, sticky tires on the 550i Sport. I don't miss the 20mpg and boat size. Oh, I miss the stereo and the seats as well. Logic 7 was only ok for a stereo, but a lot better than the stock FR-S stereo. Those BMW seats are just amazing. The FR-S seats are truly great, but they're utter crap compared to 5-series sport seats, possibly the best automotive seats ever.

I don't get the Scirocco R. You give up usability and still have FWD but with a way higher price.
