86 vs 15 Golf R ?
So, I have been following the STI for a while. Until Detroit reveal.
I heard people said they would pick Golf R over STI. So I went ahead and check it out..... It is freaking awesome So why don't we have this thread already ? |
I too am interested in the Golf R. I have always been a fan of the GTI's and Golf R32. Any news or pics? I'm lazy to do a search.

Looks way too plain for a Golf R. Don't know what VW is thinking. This car is probably going to be priced around $35k. But it looks pretty damn similar to it's regular Golf.

As a daily driver for the $7k you save who gives a fuck. Besides a little more power and AWD nothing else in that car matters over the GTI |

You can save 7K for STi with FWD. EVO with FWD. who gives a fuck, huh? Get real. |

No there aren't. The R makes nothing for VW while the GTI has been a category winner in the car world for 30 years. And the STI and R are a badge of honor more than value. you can make the lesser just as good for less. You get real. |
Realistically, the GTI has gotten SO good that it does somewhat step on the toes on the current Golf R. The way the mk6 pricing was, you essentially were paying ~10k for AWD.
The new Golf R, maybe not so much, with the pretty significant increase in power. Rewind back to the original R32. It was very distinguishable from a GTI, even from someone who knew nothing about VW's or car. The mk5, a little less so. Mk6 R and Mk6 GTI - you could barely separate the two, minus the badge/wheels. MK7 R just screams blah to me. So boring, so subtle. meh. My subjective opinion anyway. |
The Golf R interior is in a different league to the STI or EVO, in fact a GTI's is in a different league... but i think comparing the Golf r to the STI is comparing apples and oranges, i'm sure on paper they are similar but they will inevitably drive very different. If i was going to track the car it would have to be an sti, but as something that is quick and will never see a track the golf r is a very good buy...

It's probably tops for a daily driver, but it's a more complex FWD biased AWD system that pushes the curb weight to about 225 kilos more than the GT86 and gets 19/27 in mileage if you have to compare. I really like how the Golf R shed about 45 kilos from its predecessor. I think that people shouldn't have to substantiate things like, "Why did you buy X over Y or Z?" The proper answer is, "Because I like it."

Do you own a GTI? Why are you getting so upset about FWD being Fail Wheel Drive? Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of pocket rocket hatches. I owned a tuned MS3 for 4 years. When I shopping for my MS3, I cross-shopped it with GTi and MiniS. I modified my MS3 to the point where it was beating lightly modded EVO/STi in the drag race. But, no matter how you put it to sugarcoat it, a Fail Wheel Drive is a Fail Wheel Drive. If you like it, alright. But don't get to so defensive about it. |
