If 'there's no one around' - you're the only car on the road and if the cop hears you squealing tires in many states you'll get a ticket. In a couple of states it will come with misdemeanor charge, expensive fine and a bunch of points on license.

Wait I thought traction control takes care of that right? Doesn't it brake the slipping wheel to send power to the other wheel? I imagine it's not set up as well as say McLaren's "brake steer" system, but it should get the job done right?

RWD w/ open Diff in slippery road conditions sucks, even if the TC kicks in your not effectively gaining any additional traction during an emergency. RWD w/ LSD has an effective control of available traction, and matted with TC. Most computers can control the available traction dynamically.

He's not talking about TC. He's talking about software implementations that will brake one wheel that is slipping just enough to send some power to the other rear wheel. Like some new Beemers do. SoftLSD or smth. |

In an open diff if you hold one wheel the other will spin twice as fast as when both wheels are spinning.

You brake the wheel that is spinning. It gives the other wheel something to push against so it can move again. Torque in an open diff goes to the path of least resistance.

^ It does not take much in terms of brake torque to stop the spinning wheel completely (and you need to apply even less not to stall the engine) . And that's as much torque as this softLSD will send to the wheel with grip. If it's enough to get moving - fine.

I agree. electronic faux diffs work. Just the downside is it wears down the brakes and heats them up also. That would be bad for the track use.

I was speaking from the perspective of not having any traction control - old open diff AE86. I got stuck in the snow more times than I can count. My current car doesn't have TC either but just being FWD helps. Actually I've never owned a car with TC or ABS.

If you apply the ebrake lightly in an open-diff car (not enough to lock up both wheels, but enough to give the wheel that has traction something to push against) it can have the same effect as the "e-diff" and help get you unstuck.

I used it with my old car, it definitely works.
That was one of the few FWD cars that could do this trick

if the veloster turbo really is 21k like rumored, what price would the FRS need to hit to stay competitive? How much more would you pay?
