17x8 + 35 will NOT poke. 17x9 +35 will poke a bit. Please keep in mind that the 17x9 wheels is 25.4mm wider than a 17x8 wheel. When using the same offset, this means that 50% of that 25.4mm will be added to the "outside" of the wheel.
Short, while the 17x9 +35 will poke about 5-8mm, the 17x8 will be -12.5ish mm narrower, resuling in a near flush/4mmish tucked in setup

Sounds like an XXR Wheel ;-)
Something around 15-20mm.
If you dont want to go mad on camber/coilovers and want just a small amount (5ish mm) of poke, go for 18x8.75 +35 (they offer that offset aswell)

Hey guys,

So here is the deal. A couple of months ago I ordered a set of gram lights 17x9 +40 square.

Now they should be in sometime this month and I need to figure out the setup. I was hoping to run 255/40 with coilovers.

Any kind of setup info would be appreciated.

Hey everyone I'm getting 18x8.5+38 or +35 all around and I was wondering what size tire size I should get. I'm lowered on Eibach sport lines about 1.4 inches. I don't really want tire stretch and I want a meaty tire look so the meatiest I can go. And anybody have any tire recommendations? I live in Seattle so Rainy city I want all seasons and I want them to have a very wide square contact surface so they look very wide. Thank you!

245/35/18 are the ideal size, however if you want more tire flank you may go for 245/40/18, but your speedo will be off.

If you want to see how 245/35/18 look you can check my journal (link in my sig) as I'm running those on 18x8.75

I would say the negative on 8.5" rims with even the 245/35's is rim exposure.

I guess I got used to how tucked in my 215's were and now with the 245's on 18x8.5's / et 44 the rim is more out there than the tire.

This causes a major problem on painted rims.. I now have two blemished/bruised/frak'd up (how ever you want to call it) rims.

Thats strange. A 8.5" wheel is 21.60cm wide, a 245 tire is 24.5cm wide, so it should not expose the wheel (or in other words, you should have no strech) Can you post a picture of your setup? You got me very curious there

Yeah, they are not stretched by any means, but they are not over reaching the rim either. They are pretty even... but being that way, there is not enough warning from the tire impact before the rim impacts the object.

I'll see about taking pics in while.

I get your point now. however, I dont think the stock wheels/tire do offer more protection, except for being a bit more tucked in.

Not all tires are created equal though. If you compare a dozen different 245 tires you will see widths vary greatly, between manufacturers and types of tires.

Also some tires incorporate a "rim protector" edge on the sidewall of the tire, intended to cover or protrude and protect the rim from curbing

Will I have to worry about any rubbing at all cause I don't want to worry about that I just want to be care free put the wheels and tires on the car and go.

Well the Hankook V12 K110's seem a bit on the narrow side for a 8.5 rim.

This is my first post, so be gentle. I've been reading threads for like 2 hours. Can someone answer my question please? I have a stock BRZ that I will be taking to the track in the next month or two. I have some DR-38 (17x9 +38) with 255/45 tires (Hankook RS3s) That are currently on my WRX. Will these wheels fit on the BRZ? If so, what is required to make them fit? I don't care how they look. I just want to know if I can track them without them rubbing on a stock suspension. Thanks in advance.
