Someone on a TC forum has got to have an audio build going, or replaced the head unit. Just need to search scion forums. It might not have happened yet, but in time. It took a bit for people to figure out the backup camera for the Bespoke.

I agree. That's why I've got the same thread on a Scion site. I also put it on diymobileaudio and crutchfield. Sooner or later someone who has the answer or access to the diagrams I need will see one of them. I'm making an assumption in that the controls work in essentially the same way as the Subie does, using resistor values instead of being carried on the canbus. If that is wrong, I'm just spinning my wheels.

This would be my suggestion (I'm the guy who figured it out for the BRZ)
Get a pinout of the 2014 Scion HU and figure out which wires are the SWC input to the HU. They'll be in one of the harnesses already there, so you can put additional pins into the existing connector. You need to figure out how the TC SWCs work. There's two ways to do it. The more difficult way is to buy a set of them, and use your multimeter to figure out what the pin-out is and how they work. Once you're able to reverse engineer them and produce an electrical schematic of what they're doing, it'd be easy enough to replicate it. The easier way is to find a troubleshooting / service manual. That should give you a diagnostic info page for what the different pins are supposed to be outputting for different controls, which could be used to make an equivalent circuit with custom switches. I don't have that info, and I don't know where you'd find it, but feel free to tag me in a post or PM me if you'd like help analyzing that info or designing any circuits. I'd be happy to help you guys out.

This is the part that is killing me. The only pinouts I can find don't include the connector I need. I'm plenty capable of the rest if I can only get the pinouts.

I have learned that the pins are 6, 7 & 8, (at least it looks that way) but I haven't got which plug it is supposed to be yet. I'll get there eventually.

Picture on the right, it's one of the two ports not used... So that narrows it down to about 30-40 pins. Just make some jumpers and see if you can fuzz it. |

I thought I knew. Now I'm not so sure.
It appears that 6,7,&8 are free on the main plug. Could those be the ones instead of a completely unused port?

Have you eliminated the possibility that the pins are the same as on the BRZ?
That HU has the 28-pin connector, and pins 21 through 23 are disconnected. There are the two additional connectors, but I know the FR-S HU has options for an add-on GPS module, so I'd assume at least one of those is dedicated to connecting that module. Have you tried those pins on the 28-pin connector?

The question is, "is Toyota/Scion more likely to keep the same wiring pattern in the FR-S as they used in other recent vehicles or would they make it the same as the BRZ?" Based on the photos supplied by #944_10_Series_FRS, 21 through 23 are not available. I tracked down an electrical for the 08 Scions. It clearly calls out pins 6,7, & 8 for the steering wheel controls, with a resistor based system. This is the same as has been used in at least some Toyota vehicles. It is not at all clear regarding which connector they belong in. I have my suspicions and will test it soon.
