Have you tried the Mitec springs and shifter bushings and tranny insert with redline? The MTL is thinner so it's easier for cold weather.. the springs and such is to help with the shifting... I'm having my car serviced next week I hope.

My car is currently getting it's transmission replaced and I asked about using a different fluid. They said that it would void warranty… I want to do what they say because I've finally found a good dealer to work with, but I wish I could use the better transmission fluid.

You do know that is a 100% lie right?

You must use a fluid that meets GL4 for the trans and GL5 for the rear Diffy. They cannot deny warranty claims if you use fluids that meet those specifications.

Motul Gear 300 is both GL4 and GL5 compliant.

Yeah we are good friends with one of the gurus at SOA who determines warranty stuff so I am fairly sure we are right on it.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of fluids I should use before I actually get my BRZ. But I don't understand how can a fluid be both GL-4 and GL-5 rated. I thought that the ratings did not supersede one another. As in something that requires GL-3 cannot be replaced with GL-5 instead. Plus, aren't the compositions of GL-4 vs GL-5 different? So how exactly does Motul achieve both ratings?

Based off of my reading so far, I'm looking at Mobil1 0w20 for oil, amsoil 75w90 for tranny, and Motul Gear 300 LS for the diff.

Usually the compositions of GL-4 and GL-5 are different, but you can have a fluid that meets the requirements for both. That's the case with the Gear300, apparently.

The transmission is spec'd for a 75W-90 GL3, you can't find a GL3 anymore, GL4 is the new GL3. The rear end is also spec'd for a 75W-90, but in a GL5. Since the Motul meets both GL4 and GL5 specs and is friendly to yellow metals, it's applicable in both the transmission and the rear end.

You don't need Gear300 LS in the rear end, that's for clutch type limited slips, and we have a torsen type, no need for the LS. Buy the regular Gear300 and you can use the exact same fluid for both.

The Torsen type LSD doesn't require an additive (friction modifier) like a clutch type does. I'm not sure if it is the same for all variants of the 86, but my Canadian spec FR-S owner's manual calls for 75W85 in the differential. 75W90 is listed as an acceptable alternative. I'm using Redline 75W85 GL-5 in mine. http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=40&pcid=4

Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90 would fit the bill as well.

LSD does not need additive like a clutch style would.

At operating temps the 75/90 should be find even in cold climates, although a thinner would not hurt, whatever the lowest spec you can run according to the manual is what I would run. Just remember GL3/4 for the Trans and GL5 for the rear diffy.

I changed out my tranny fluid towards the end of summer and noticed it being a bit smoother. I used Motul. My only problem now is that getting into first and second are pain due to the cold. It really needs to get warmed up before it becomes smooth again.

Am I the only one that with still the stock oil from the factory after 4.000km has no problem with shifting gear?

At first it was not smooth at all especially with cold car and first-second gear but now even at cold it's just the first shifting from first to second that sometime is just not very smooth. 1 mins later it's all good and very very smooth. I was going to change the transmission oil but right now I'm quite happy with it.

Temperatures: from 0c to 10c
