Masterpiece or not, for the ~$40k into the car now plus the purchase price you could have a much nicer car.

I love mine, but if $70k was my budget I would be driving something different.

Thats why he has an LFA over 4 supras and a shitload or porches. The guy is an enthusiast with style, and also doesn't waste his money on useless super cars

Depends on the state... but if you have to ask, in a nutshell: no (if the state has visual inspection), maybe (if a good tune for tailpipe test only)

CA allows engine swaps as long as engine going in is same emissions standard (or newer) than chassis it is going into. Oh, and engine has to be CA smog legal (i.e. no imported "new" engines from another country).

I've already bought a lot for my build and now I'm running into a legal issue, whether or not it's legal to swap this older 2JZ into a brand new car. I've looked into Florida laws and it's looking like it's legal. I've contacted a lawyer to look into it from his standpoint and waiting to hear back before I decide what to do next (whether hold off a little while and make it a dedicated track car or not).

EDIT: I've been quoted $10k for a completely stock swap w/ V160 to $30-35k for minimal mods. I expected to be around $20-25k but it's still up in the air. Again, legal issues are the main concern now and will ultimately determine the direction of my swap now. I'm not keen on spending another $20k+ on this swap and can only track it when I can buy a Supra instead for the same price. It's either street & track or bust.

About Jacks, I've heard that his rebuilt v160's shift much better than a *brand new* transmission. He's trying to get into the auto trans world now, as well.

Not sure about most of the US, but in Ontario (Canada) it's 100% illegal to swap in an older engine to any car. Now if you put a 2013 engine into a 2014 chassis of the same car I doubt anyone would notice, but if you tried to put a 94 Supra engine into a 2013 FRS/BRZ, it wouldn't be legal and unless the shop doing the e-test "overlooked" it by running a different car through the OBD test you'd never pass a test.

It's a big problem for a bunch of people that downgraded OBDII hondas to OBDI ECU's, it's impossible for them to pass an e-test now.

I have a APU supra parked next to my FRS and If you do this right you’re looking at some real money. If you do lots of the work I would say 20K just to get started with something that was going to be worth your time power wise.

But the bigger issue is turbo lag even the stock twins had lag you had to drive around on the track.

If all you care about is drag you can disregard the rest of this.

It very hard to get usable throttle response and more than about 700 out of a 2JZ.
My supra is of the few built for RR not drag. There are not many who have more experience making a responsive 2jz.

This is what I had to do to get lag less than or equivalent to the stock twins and big power.
BC 3.4 stroker kit
BC Lightened knife edge crank
Fully built head with 5 angle
4 plate cc clutch
Custom billet 67 turbo with a 58 and 96 hot side
And about 1000 other supporting mods but long story short small turbo + big engine is the only way to make usable RR power.

I used the 58 hot side at the AutoX (750 HP) usually turned the boost down to give about 600 when I wanted a decent time .
The 96 hot side was used for RR DE days and made 850HP but more important made 750TQ very quickly.

This is a very very fun and terrifying car, As a driving instructor and car guy I have driven more than my fair share of fast cars and nothing tries to actively kill you like a quick to power 800+ HP supra (maybe a 700hp 930 Porsche is about as bad). I would not put 800 HP in the FRS if you actually use it you best be a dam good driver.

To answer OP , you are looking at anything from 25 to 35K. I asked 2 people who did the swap and thats the price range they told me. I also went to the best supra/fabbin shop and thats the price i got expect that they gave me a very very long down time.

You can pm me if you would like more information
You dont need 25k for a 2jz what you need is around 10k. And that with the cost of labor and engine itself. If you want the best job done, and are in socal, hit up Driftmotion. If you know anything about 1jz, and 2jz they are the best do it and we are lucky to have them in socal. Im not affiliated with them at all, but a couple weeks ago they installed there single turbo kit on my cousins mk4. Did a really good job. They quoted me 10k for install of everything and the tune. Est was about 1month and that if they get everything right. Might be doing this in the near future.
