Does the FI system return excess fuel to the tank?

If so then heating of the fuel may be the problem.

I never (well almost never) fill up until the light has come on. Always (well almost always) run to 400 miles before fuelling. I am well aware of the theories about junk in the bottom of the tank but am not concerned in the least.

I've always been told to worry about contaminates if the fuel is too low.

My personal opinion is if you're pinching pennies trying to save a few lbs for performance.... Upgrade. Don't risk starving/contaminating your engine for 20lbs~ of fuel weight savings.

1..Try running your fuel tank to almost empty or whenever you normally refuel.
2... Put about 100 additional pounds of dead weight in the rear (13 gallons X about 8 lbs/gallon).
3.. See if it feels the same as if you had filled up the tank.

That's why we have fuel filters. I've run out my '85 MR2 several times, and given the age of the tank, and that it's probably on it's first or maybe second fuel filter, I can promise you that any in tank contaminants are not going to make it to the injectors. I just pour in a gallon and drive off. In a brand new car, and with today's fuel refinement processes, you shouldn't worry about particulates, and if you're going to worry about anything it's getting stuck blocking traffic.

It's psychological. I recently (accidentally) ran my BRZ on gas fumes and I was praying for it not to stall or suck up particles before I can get to a station. So naturally, I gently drove it like it had no brakes, very gingerly and going to neutral every sec I could. Performance wasn't on my mind then.
