Coilover spring diameter vs OEM
Got myself new wheels and tires (18x8.5 48offset - 245/35/r18) and my calculations were all wrong, the front wheels rest against the front spring.
How much space will I regain if I was to install coilovers? Last edited by ahaghshenas; 11-25-2013 at 08:36 AM. |

Why would fitting coilovers alter the wheel clearance?

I measured the diameter of the OEM front spring it was about 12cm. The diameter of aftermarket coilover springs are significantly smaller, which should give more clearance.
With stock wheels the gap from the OEM spring is just under 20mm. The wheel setup I choose has moved the tire innerwall around 15mm closer and it touches. I know I could use spacers and it will be sorted, but there not that cheap and I plan to get coilovers eventually. If the coilovers will sort out the issue I will order them now, but dont want to buy them to find out I still need spacers?? Any input welcome |

On the KWs, I gained at least 10, if not 20mm of clearance over the stock pieces. With 17x9 wheels, 42 offset, and 245/40 Hankook RS3s, I only had only about enough room to fit a credit card between the spring perch and the tire. Obviously, adding any camber at all would put the tire up against the perch. Due to the width and offset difference of our wheels, you should in theory have about 6mm more clearance than I did with the stock springs and struts.

It's a pretty huge difference. With my wheels I had about 1-3mm clearance with stock suspension. With my RCE T0's (mostly the same as KW V1) I can fit my hand sideways between the wheel and the coils now.
