I have a set of Gislaved Nordfrost 5s sitting at home (my dad's old winters) and a quick toonie test showed about 70% tread on two of em, and about 50% with the other two. Budget is tight currently, and if I could avoid buying new winters for at least this winter, it would help. I commute between Sauga and Oakville so I don't usually encounter too much snow on the ground.
You need 5-6 mm of tread remaining to get any grip in snow. That's about 7/32.

For packed snow or ice you can still get decent grip down to 4 mm or 5/32 but then they're worn out.

50% tread remaining would be just barely enough. Put those on the front.

If the snows are five years old they're junk no matter how much tread is left because they won't grip on ice. The rubber goes too hard after about five years on the car or in the garage.

However, even old worn out snow tires are better than leaving summers on.

TireRack.com has Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter (205/55R16) for $87 each, with a $40 MIR on a set of 4. Their cheapest in OEM size is the General Altimax Arctic at $114 each.

HTH. Best of luck this winter.

General is another Continental company. Great tires.

Can we actually get Tire Rack stuff here?
Seems like once you factor in shipping and taxes, it might not be the same picture.

I'm on 16s now - for those on 17s/stock size, how are you finding it?
I noticed a little bit of squirm when rolling out, and the sidewall height definitely does not inspire cornering confidence (in the dry)

I actually had to rewrite my post when I clued in to his location being NJ. At first I suggested prices from PMCtire.com.

I was out, and on my way home it started snowing like MAD lol I was still on my stock tires because I'm storing my car, I didn't know the snow would hit just like that! Man this car is tail happy indeed, i slowly get into 2nd gear at 2k rpm and i would still go side ways a lil, going into a right turn at like 15km and giving a lil gas u can start drifting lol

it's not that our cars are tail happy, it's the stock summer tires. I got my Blizzak tire and today after some snow i purposely tried to slide but i couldn't. Blizzak worked like a champ in today's dump of snow.

I have to say that TCS and VSC work great to keep the car safe and drama-free.
Even sudden mid-corner throttle stabs in 2nd-gear didn't get it out of shape.

Good to hear! Have a set of blizzak's ws70 that I still need to install.
Was driving around markham on residential roads and the tail would give out at 15-20kmph... It was fun and surprisingly easy to control.

Going on a main road with fresh layers of snow however was a different story. Won't be taking her out when it snows.

You're not trying hard enough. Try cranking a bit of lock on and then sneeze, you'll be 180 in no time.

I assume you have traction control fully off?

If traction control is on you'll just hit everything nose on....
