No, my objective was to avoid freeways as much as possible.

I went from Colorado Springs to Montrose to Telluride to Monticello (UT) to Flagstaff to Quartzsite on back roads and then finally to SoCal on I-10.

Where were chains needed the most? Would they have been needed if taking the interstate 25 south to Alberquerque?

I had problems on Monarch pass between Colorado Springs and Montrose and then on the segment south of Telluride. This was despite prompt snow plowing by the road crews.

I think the problems were exacerbated by the temps hovering around freezing so that there was a layer of water on top of the ice and snow at times.

I suspect the traffic on the interstates keeps them in good shape unless you happen to get caught right in the middle of a storm.

Hopefully some locals will chime in...
