^^This. Just take instrument brightness down one notch from max and you'll see map dimming kick in. The BRZ manual makes mention of this, albeit a bit vaguely.

BTW, I had originally ordered black (my default sporty car color), but then saw the DGM in person and immediately called Clint, who was nice enough to let me switch even though my original choice was already on order.

Yup. And I still enjoy driving it -- they're both fun to drive!

Both cars have interesting designs and are well thought out. But in both cases, it's as though the designers lost interest -- so we wind up with a klutzy cyclops brake light in the BRZ/FRS and a self-dumping glove compartment in the MCS...

I miss my MCS so much. She completed me for the longest time and then transmission issues.

I agree, the fun continues as you head southwest on the hypotenuse from Sedona, though you eventually have to pay for it with a boring dead straight road on the way to I-10.

For some reason, Prescott was a challenge for the BRZ nav. I kept being told to turn into a dead end road to continue on toward Quartzsite. I doubt this was ever a thru street so it's apparently a database error. I encountered several other routing errors along the way so I don't have much confidence in the nav unit.

In the nav setup you can select different map styles for the day and night modes. If you manually select day or night from the Audio settings page (another klutzy design decision, IMO...) the map correctly changes appearance per your specified styles depending on the manual day/night selection.

But, if you configure the day/night mode to be based on the headlights instead, the nav screen simply dims the day style instead of switching to the night style when the headlights are turned on.

Does your nav behave differently?

You can select the nav to have different day & night map styles, & you can also change how it switches between day & night modes. One way is by time, however since when it gets dark enough to warrant night time display of the nav changes constantly depending on geographic location, altitude, proximity to obstructing features, & time of year, the default is "automatic" which is governed by the headlights. When they come on, the HU drops into night display with one exception:

If you have the instrument cluster brightness at max. Have it there & it won't switch to night mode. Not sure why, but it doesn't bug me, as I find max cluster brightness to be too bright anyway & thus prefer the 2nd brightest setting instead. That setting doesn't keep the HU from changing into night mode when the headlights switch on.

As you indicated, when I reduced the panel brightness one click from max, the map dimming started working correctly.

Sure looks like a bug to me...

Nope, it's a feature. This function is mentioned in the owner's manual IIRC. They wouldn't have published it if it was a bug. It's annoying and useless, I think, but it was intentional.

Admittedly, I haven't RTFM'd yet. But I did search the nav PDFs for "bright" and didn't find any mention of this. So I'm curious where this "feature" is discussed.

I'd also like to know their rationale for making it behave this way!
