3 crates of 7.62x39 in the trunk should give me enough traction for the winter.

It's not getting stuck you need to worry about, it's stopping after you get going that matters.

Multiply the available grip by as much as you want, zero will still be zero.

Modern summer tires just do not deliver any grip at all in winter conditions. Zero for practical purposes.

Not the vehicle, it's the tires.

It is amusing how many people who do not use proper tires conclude the vehicle is no good.

Awd is pretty useless for stopping.....

This is very good advice. For the sake of your neighbours follow it.

Or park it.

Actually, for the price of a good set of 18 in wheels (for which you'll need new tires as well) you can buy a set of good quality Sport Edition cheapo alloy wheels and snow tires:

Then you can save up for a better set of 17 in summer tires to fit to your factory alloys.

I made the mistake of buying the cheapest winter tires (on 16" steelies) I could find last year. The OEM summers have better grip in anything except snow-covered roads (which thankfully is a rare situation in southern Ontario). I switched the summers back on in the late winter when it was -1 and freezing rain downpour, and it was a world of improvement in grip.

TL;DR - Don't cheap out.

I'm the opposite of "amused" by how many people seem to have a hard time understanding what season SUMMER tires are for.

You must live in a different SW Ontario than me if snow covered roads is a rare situation in winter.

OK well then can someone recommend a set of snow tires for cheap?

I have Michelin X-Ice on my winter car, but they might be a bit more expensive than you're looking for. I had a cheap set of Dunlop's that were good too. Hopefully you have your original rims around, will save you some money on steel rims for your winter tires.

To be honest, no matter how cheap a winter tire you put on, it will be miles ahead of the summer tires you have on it now... All-season tires "under perform" in the winter, summer tires simply don't perform; they're dangerous and will cost you more in damage to your car, lost work, towing costs and the possibility of injuring/killing someone.

Good for you for making the smart and responsible decision, I hope some of th other uninformed drivers in this thread follow your lead.

Driving my BRZ today in severe winter conditions reveals that you would need to be certifiable to try and drive this car in Canadian winters without full snow tires. All seasons will not work.

The Torsen diff shows its stripes big time when friction approaches zero.

The way a Torsen pushes torque across the diff can be disconcerting to anyone used to an open diff or one of the more conventional LSD.

What's the torsen like on ice? I thought they were supposed to act like an open diff if the grip on wheel is pretty much zero?
