Adding weights isn't going to do anything if you're driving in icy conditions. How much more a tractor-trailer rig weighs compared to your car doesn't do a thing for him if he starts sliding on ice. Learning defensive driving goes a lot further than relying on something in your trunk that only makes you 'think' you're safer.

I would think added weight in the back make the car harder to correct in the event of the rear sliding around right? That being said don't bother unless you have problem with initial traction, good winter tires and the LSD will work magic, this is a light car. Drove it all last winter and couldn't ask for a better winter vehicle, unless it was AWD... lol

People worry about traction to get going on ice. It isn't logical but there you are. Adding weight over the drive wheels does give you better traction to get going. However, your point is absolutely correct. Once you do get going the extra weight is a big disadvantage.

Steering is adversely affected by weight over the rear wheels. Braking nay or may not be improved. Generally speaking adding weight over the rear axle does shorten braking distances by getting more braking grip at the rear but not by enough to make the drawbacks acceptable.

However, going around corners is more difficult with the weight distribution moved towards the rear of the car. Rear and mid engined cars can be a real handful when cornering in winter conditions.

Awd has its tricky points too. Fwd is safest for winter and can be fastest in the long run.

Adding weight to the rear of the car will make cornering more difficult.

With proper tires you don't need extra grip from the rear of the car to accelerate. Braking and steering are much more important than getting going.

Just BTW, if you skid in an awd car you really need to know what you're doing to avoid a crash. If you have an awd Subaru I recommend you try this in a safe place. Subaru awd cars are extremely difficult to skid but once you do it can get pretty hairy pretty quickly.

The BRZ by comparison skids at lower speeds but is so easy to correct a kid could do it.

i didn't put any weights in mine

but was thinking of trying this winter

as for braking/truning yada yada... i'll say only one thing, the RWD ice-racers around here fill the various cavities in the rear of their cars with CEMENT.

yes the rear end will tend to swing out more, but that's where your throttle comes in, you hammer down and gain traction at a vector of where you're pointing... so RWD cars don' thave problems with traction... so long as you don't actually STOP, which is a rather important consideration for street driving.

If you're going to do anything, used kitty litter. If you get stuck you can spread it around to give you grip to get un-stuck.

you dont need it.
in fact i would say it makes things worse in the corners.

the car has a near 50/50 balance and likes to kick the back out normally, the added weight just makes the back end easier/quicker to kick out.
so if you are looking to drift every corner, sure add weight.
