Gritty 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd shift

It has started to happen within the last 100-200 miles, don't know whats wrong. Maybe i should tell dealer to change tranny fluid or maybe i should raise the cutch pedal a bit to see if that helps. Ive also noticed and increase in play of about 1/4 inch of the shift lever while in a gear or neutral, that might be normal though, just checking.

have you messed with the clutch pedal adjustment already? If so you may have it adjusted too tight.

Hi ya ZackZ ......

First thing that comes to mind is what I call "lazy leg". That's where I get lax and don't push the clutch pedal all the way down.

The "play" in the shift lever is probably "normal", as things losen up with more use (within reason).

I notice that my car is a bit "notchy" when the transmission is cold. It seems to take several miles before it warms up and smooths out.

A fluid change may be in order, as long as its not replaced by the same stuff ....

I hope you get it settled down .....

Takes some mileage for things to smooth out with the manual.. Mine did the same and felt much better at 1500 miles. I'm over 4500 now and it's as it should be.. 2nd gear still not so smooth shifting to 3rd when cold.. But all is fine when up to operating temps now.. Be patient as things break in..

I want to change the fluid but the car is a lease so i dont know if it will void my warranty if something goes bad on the tranny. Maybe i can ask them if they approve certain fluids to still keep the warranty.

What is too tight, clutch pedal to high or too low? I brought it down a bit when i first got the car but after about 20 miles i could feel the grittiness when shifting. I immediately brought the pedal back to stock (or as close as possible) and the gritty feeling went away, but now it came back. Should i raise it ever so slightly just to see if it smooths out?

I wouldn't think that it would affect the warranty, as long as it was the same viscosity and GL rating as what is recommended in the owner's manual.

I understand that "Redline" and "Royal Purple" products work good in MTs, but you might have to BYOO (Bring Your Own Oil) to the dealership for the change.

However, if you are conservative, you might run the thought by the service manager.

PS - since you have adjusted the clutch, you might wish to check and make sure the adjusting lock nut is tight ....

650 miles, just got it a couple weeks ago. I'll check the lock nut.

Well, if you're sure the clutch is adjusted proper and the transmission is full of fluid .... ...... and the clutch fluid in the reservior is up to the full line .... ....... you might consider waiting a few more miles to see if it "settles in".

After thought ...... it's possible that the clutch system has air in it and needs bleeding ..... however, not likely with a new car.
