Drift-Office : JDL Header... TUNED! :)

As some of you may know, I ordered the header sometime in May of this year and yes, it took awhile to get here. Course, by the time it did, I had my turbo setup already and installed and there wasn't any more need for that - until one of my customers @ a recent 86 Nights event saw the header and expressed interest. We scheduled a date and here we are. And WOW - I have to say, this product was certainly well worth the wait and held lots of surprises here!

Here are the specs of the JDL installed vehicle :

2013 BRZ w/ 4800 Miles. 92 Octane.
100% OEM STOCK, down to the cardboard filter.

Name: trio.JPG
Views: 6353
Size: 132.1 KB

So it started off as a Friday BLUES kinda day - 2 2014 FRSs and a singular 2013 BRZ. Did our typical baseline, moving on to installing the e-famous header. For the inclined, here's a recap :

Name: jdl1.JPG
Views: 6293
Size: 85.6 KB

Name: jdl2.JPG
Views: 6049
Size: 93.2 KB

Name: jdl3.JPG
Views: 6669
Size: 88.3 KB

Top notch quality and construction, attention to detail and a clean finish makes the JDL a popular choice, and rightfully so.

Name: fitment3.JPG
Views: 6112
Size: 83.1 KB

Installation was pretty straight forward - other than making sure you're on a lift to do it properly, there weren't any issues... until we started up. The supplied bolts weren't cutting it and a small exhaust leak resulted where the header flange met with the stock overpipe. No biggie. Went to the bolt bin, sourced out another 2 smaller ones and the issue was rectified in minutes.

Results : Rather than posting a bunch of baselines and such, I'll cut to the chase and post up the before and after results. Here they are...

Name: 4th.jpg
Views: 6330
Size: 80.9 KB

^^^ 4th Gear Pull : Alleviates (not eliminate) the torque dip from 3200RPM but gives you the top end to red line! Almost 190WHP and 150#s TQ! To date, this has been the highest performing UEL that we've tested (between Borla / RevWorks) and all this on a STOCK exhaust system too!

Name: 2nd.jpg
Views: 6005
Size: 77.8 KB

^^^ I was very impressed and started to do runs in 2nd and 3rd gear respectively as well...

Name: 3rd.jpg
Views: 6131
Size: 77.3 KB

^^^ This has got to be one of the highest if not HIGHEST 3rd Gear pull I've done on any GT86. I rarely see 3rd gear numbers get past the mid 170s. Based on the above 2 posts, you can tell that this car will be pretty formidable in an Auto X environment.

Name: JDL Final.jpg
Views: 6005
Size: 79.4 KB

^^^ Lastly, I had installed an AVO panel filter to see what it would do - there was a marginal loss of 1-ish WHP @6500 but traded off and gained after 7000RPM in terms of both WHP and TQ!

Name: thumbsup.JPG
Views: 5859
Size: 96.7 KB

Without having to sound like I'm gushing, I think I speak for all the peeps that were here today to witness the event that this is certainly one exciting product and out performed our expections. Oddly enough, I had mentioned to the customer before tuning that I had expected the performance to land between the BORLA UEL and HKS EL offering and I was right! All this on a stock exhaust system too!

For those concerned with the wait, fret not for this is the choice that gives you not the best of both worlds, but is the only offering that gives you the Suby rumble people look for in a UEL and better top end than the average UEL and falls slightly below the performance of a EL...

Yes, I'll be doing a 3 way comparison between all 3 UELs very soon, and yes, video to follow in the following day or two.

Regards!

My chrome coated JDL UEL just shipped today! Really happy to see this. Best UEL on the market. Wonder if I can hit 200 whp with my full 3" exhaust, intake, and stage 2 fa20club.

Every time I see pictures of them I am recommited to buying them. Was offered a prototype for next to nothing as my car will be used to mock for a local fab shop. But I dont know if they will look as nice as the JDLs.

Dat collector.

Good to see some numbers back it up as well.

Got mine the other day as well. Not as shiny as your chrome, but the au natural is beautiful as well. This header and some supporting bolt-ons should get people over that 200whp mark more easily. Now I have to decide if I can wait till spring to install.

Being a prototype car is not always worth it. Even for a well known shop. Plenty of bad experiences documented on this forum. JDL has done a nice job on these and their customer service and communication has been good. They have fixed the few issues that came up during production, which can happen with any new product. Yes it did take a while, but the
"worth the wait" adage holds true.

Quick question, does this header get in the way of any components in the engine bay,and are you able to use the OEM splash guard with it? Otherwise Im very impressed.

I am not paid by JDL, nor am I affiliated with them in any way. I'll have my thoughts on this in a few days in the 3 Way Shootout.

Nothing in the install process needed any modifications. Pretty perfect fit IMHO. I also checked the flanges against a straight edge and it was dope.
