I find the whole 'it isn't a real 86 anymore' argument amusing and somewhat interesting but ultimately inconsequential.

What defines the point where an engine swap results in a car no longer being the 'same type of car'? Engine & chassis manufacturer? Engine type? Cylinder count? Drivetrain configuration? Country of origin? Method of aspiration?

It's all an exercise in one hand clapping really.

Is a B18/k20/k24 powered Civic still not a Civic?
Is an F20/F22 powered Hachiroku still not a Hachiroku?
Is an RB or JZ powered S13/14/15 still not a Silvia?
Is a 2JZ powered E30/E36 still not a BMW?
Is an EJ powered GT86 still not a GT 86?
Is an LS swapped Miata still not a Miata?
Is a Chevy powered '32 Ford still not a '32 Ford?

Then again...
Would a Juke R still be a Juke?
Would an AWD, 4G63 powered Civic still be a Civic?
Would a V8 powered RX7 still be an RX7?
Would a Chevy V8 powered F430 still be a Ferrari?
Would a 2JZ powered Vette still be a Vette?
Would a Viper engined Gallardo still be a Gallardo?

Folks can chime in all they want but it's always going to be a subjective thing. In the case of this 2JZ powered 86 I feel that the owner/builder deserves unconditionally huge props for the cleanliness and effectiveness of the build. I'd bet that the overwhelming majority of ordinary passers by or casual enthusiasts would clock it as a GT86 due to the stock looks as well.

Opinions among the hard core enthusiast crowd will surely vary due to the extent of the mods regardless of the fact that this car's still technically all-Toyota. The inevitable V8 swapped 86s to come will surely also divide opinions just as the V8 Silvias already do.

Does it really matter? Only as far as personal opinions go.

Whatever it is, let's enjoy seeing this FR-S shaped object break into the 8s with some proper race slicks and skinnies on it instead of DOT slicks.

Please refer back to my next post, everyone who wants to be fast, doesn't keep the stock motor, in almost everything, Except the supra/skyline. A honda civic with a k20 is still a fucking civic. Swapping the motor out of a car doesn't change what kind of car it is, even more so when the motor is from the same chassis maker.
How could I be wrong if its my opinion? Not really sure why your getting so butt hurt about this. IMO swapping the motor out of a car for one not even in its bloodline is completely changing the identity of the car to me. If I see ANY car with another donor motor, its a hybrid to me plain and simple. Its not a gt86 without the motor, its a shell. Thats like putting an acer computer in an macbook case and calling it a macbook. Its got nothing to do with a VIN or being fast, its got to do with the accomplishment of pushing the envelope with an fa20 and the bragging rights that go along with it.

FYI K20's were still found in civics so no idea where your going with that argument, someone else mentioned a b18 swap as well and that came in a civic too....a 2JZ doesnt remotely have anything to do with a car built primarily by Suburu.

This is all semantics in the end. Its your opinion vs mine so no one will win this argument.

And I think I'm getting mistaken for not giving the guy his due credit. It's an impressive machine no doubt. All I did was give my opinion on why people had an issue with the title. I guess I'm just in the crowd that thinks that title is reserved for a non hybrid street car. Or else we might as well give the title to the first ft86 chasis on a funny car and never mention it again...

Is there any chance ekanoo would be willing to make a mount/brackets/driveshaft for members on here like myself? I'd be very interested. Also what diff is it using? I wouldn't mind the swap and would be willing to pay for it

Supra engine? Yawn. proven motor to make well over thousand hp. been done countless times. not impressive, impress me by doing something different. I read an article on a Honda Oddessy that had a custom built motor (still stock motor that came from factory, just built to piss) that made 986 hp. In a mini van. Thats impressive. Thousand hp K20's and 1500 hp EJ257's, engines not made from iron, thats impressive. Its much harder to get large hp numbers out of a smaller engine than it is out of a bigger engine, just sayin.
