Probably not enough time has passed since '14s came out. Looking into a BRZ but the engine woes is holding me back.

If you are talking about the DI issues, this was fixed in January...

There will always be issues posted here that could scare you away from the car, but it's also the case with any car forum you go to. Stop being afraid of your shadow and use your judgement.

I'm pretty sure the engine issues you've read about on this forum represent far less than 0.5% of the engines produced.

I know people who have had theirs for more than 10 000 miles and their biggest woe has been the crickets... seriously, take a chill pill, analyze the facts and you will see that it's not even a widespread issue. It's a few isolated cases, just like with any other car/engine.

Don't worry about issues. New car = Full warranty. Don't let little teething issues on a first year model of a car scare you away. If you are even considering the twins, you understand what draws people to this car and why they buy it. Life is to short. Buy the car and enjoy it. Drive it

If you are concerned about build quality , just check out cars that are made in china or korea.
Japanese build quality is up there with cars costing ten times the price.

Ok Mad1723, I will take a chill pill & sleep with a night light. Also I am referring to tracked BRZ / FR-S. I would hope the engines don't seize under normal street driving.

Edit: Are you guys aware of the ringland issues going on with the 07+ STi engines. Subaru is not doing anything about that. Which leads me to second guess Subaru engine reliability (on their new cars).

Maybe go for an older car with proven build quality and motor swap a reliable engine?

New/used have their pros and cons, you will have to decide what fits your needs and budget?

If you motor swap car you put 15k into gets totaled are you ok to build another one?

The issues that have been reported with tracked cars should have been fixed with any car produced after January 2013. There was an update to the ECU which should prevent further damage to the direct injectors. As others have said, this issue seems to be pretty limited and there are lots of folks that have tracked their car with zero issues.

That said, if you are expecting to spend a lot of time at the track, you may want to spend some money on additional cooling (radiator, oil cooler, etc). Probably worth the peace of mind.

Ketchup, I had 2 Z4s in the last 5 years... Z4 3.0SI and a Z4MR.. the MR was more maintenance and had a few internet horror stories. The Z4 is a better car in every way except it's twice the price. I can't speak for the E89 version but the E85 M are costly repairs.

So why did I get a BRZ? I have a new car and for another $10K I get a car as good or better than my M. The only suggestion I do suggest is to either get the Premium or FRS. If I had to do it again, I would not go from limited. I wanted the keyless entry and heated package...but not worth the extra money...The seats suck compared to nappa leather and the spoiler is ugly.

If you can forgo the HID headlights...get a FRS for $23K now and spend the rest on FI, brakes, suspension, and upgraded leather interior.. Also the BRZ Nav is the crappiest thing I have used...the Z4 from 2007 is far more intuitive and easy to use. I save my money and get aftermarket.

If the BRZ motor goes...it's under warranty, but if you read other forums, mini cooper, Z4 etc...no car is perfect unless you want to spend a lot of money. I'm okay with BRZ... just wish it had more power...handling is good...doesn't make me miss my M, but better as a daily driver this way.

FWIW Korean cars (Hyundai) have been at the top of their game while Toyota had some significant problems in the 2000s. Korean cars are hardly low quality, they're among the best when it comes to Hyundai.

They were above Toyota and Honda for the first time in 2006 in quality rankings, which made quite a bit of news and firmly established them amongst the top foreign car makers.
