Convertables are heavy because they have to make up for the missing roof structure. I'd be willing to bet a four door FR-S won't be a whole lot heavier than a drop-top, even if they stick a six in it.

ETA: This car would sell well if they don't try to over-reach. A "responsible" fun to drive family car that does not start at 50k is missing from the market.

I hope they don't put that grill. Hopefully they keep the 86 but make it a tad bit more stylish with 4 doors...

OK if we are going to do this, then Toyota needs to be Toyoda...

Listen, just look up Scion and read the definition... Its a pathetic name. Basically reads like "Toyota Jr" to me.

I was under the impression the convertible was scrapped due to price.

The market is already full of performance sedans and hatchbacks.
So with 4 or 5 people in any car it won't be driven to it's limits , so who cares if sedans/hatchbacks are fwd/rwd/awd.
The 86/frs/brz coupe is a unique sports car built for enthusiasts by enthusiasts.
Please keep it in it's state of purity , without added doors and missing roof.
I have a camry for the boring shopping centre stuff.

The biggest complaint has been about the lack of power. Why not focus on satisfying that demand first, before trying to move the car into other markets? Who was even asking for a convertible version?

I can see how the sedan would appeal to some people, don't get me wrong. A minor complaint that I've seen about this car has been the lack of leg room in the back seats. While this complaint pales in comparison to the power complaint, I can see a roomier sedan picking up a few extra sales.

But seriously... all that needed to be done, was to model this engine after the WRX; small twin scroll turbo, top mount intercooler, and a hood scoop... increase the comp ratio to 10:1 (a fine compromise between 12:0 and 8:2:1), with 5 psi of boost (stock). How difficult would that have really been? I mean seriously, model it just like the old 1980's-1990's line-ups. You have an N/A base model and an upgraded turbocharged model. Run the base model at $25,000 and the turbo model at $32,000...
Can't agree more. Turbo is the only thing we want now.

This is a great idea - some of us like the ability to cart around more than 1.5 people - this means we don't need to give up a fun drive for the sake of practicality.

North America needs more RWD Japanese sedans (like the Chaser, Mark 2, etc.).
Making it accessible for less than $35k would be a huge win for them.

Hybrid engine choice can be summed up due to one thing:

CAFE standards

Get used to it guys it's the way things are headed.

I totally agree with only this one person on here? I thought this was a forum for sports car lovers. Get a WRX or Camry or some other kind of ugly 4 door thing for the family drive if you have to tote the kids or your loser car-less friends around. Did you also love the 4 door Porsche? Why not a 4 door Lambo or Corvette? Oh Yeah! The wife might let you buy one of those.
By the way there is nothing cool or sleek about the looks of the VW Bug-looking WRX.
These 86s were made for 2 people only(and maybe a few groceries in the trunk). It's not a tour bus or a minivan. I can tote one brave friend at a time as long as they don't say my car is cute. Impractical? You bet ya! I wouldn't have any other way.
They better not call that 4 door 100mm longer egg an fr-s! That would be the icing on the cake to go with all the other stupid stuff I see and hear people doing every day.

Not surprised about this in the least. Toyota are pushing ahead with their new performance Hybrid programme and having proper seats in the back will open up a whole new market. Believe it or not there are a lot of forty somethings with teenage offspring who still like to thrash the back roads on a weekend. Maybe if they gave it a noticeably different look and maybe a new name (Levin anyone?) the current 86/GT86/FRS/BRZ owners would not be so anal about it?
