Didn't have any probs re-using transmission gaskets. But, the re-using the differential drain plug gasket...it leaked on me...gave it a bit more torque and slowed it down but, intend to replace it the next time around. IMO the differential drain plug gasket should be replaced each time. The fill gasket - not as critical.

Found the part # info below from some other posts:

Toyota Part #'s:
Differential fill plug gasket: SU00300122 @$2.30 each list price
Differential drain plug gasket: TOY1215710010 @$1.50 each
Transmission fill/drain plug gasket: SU00303626 @>$11 each??? WTF

Subaru Part #'s:
Differential fill plug gasket: 11126JB000
Differential drain plug gasket: 1215710010
Transmission fill/drain plug gasket: 17008AA050

Copper gaskets from O'Reilly's can be substituted for transmission gaskets they say. OIL-TITE! PN# 65275 11/16", M18

Note: Having purchased new Toyota parts...the differential drain and fill gaskets look to be identical in appearance.

If you're being really cheap, you can also blast your crush washers with a blowtorch until they're red-hot, let them cool, and reuse them as well. I used to do it all the time on my old turbo oil line banjo bolts. Just be careful not to melt them, WEAR EYE PROTECTION, and don't do it on concrete you care about (i.e. garage floor or driveway). Blowtorches have a way of making concrete explode.

I replaced my transmission oil with MTL over the weekend, and initial impressions are that the shifting effort is reduced. However, I still find that 2-3 upshifts still gets a little "notchy" as it enters 3, and downshifting from 3-2 still requires a little effort.

I wouldn't say im disappointed, but not super impressed either. I was hoping to get buttery smooth slick shifting (like my old integra type R) but whilst it's an improvement, it still hasn't fully solved my 2nd gear issues.

Any suggestions or recommendations? Or is this as good as it gets for this gearbox?

Approaching 15,000 miles and after reading this thread I'm gonna go with Motul 300. Just need to find somewhere local to pick it up at! Anyone know a good place in SoCal? I too have noticed 4th gear to be a little klunky too. Hope my tranny doesn't need to be replaced cause that would be a waste of expensive oil!

@texasbound972: I purchased all my Motul products from @CounterSpace Garage and had the work performed by @Corner3garage. It's a pleasure to deal with either.

This is not a suggestion, just my experience. Take from it what you will.

I have experimented a bit with fluids in my transmission and this is what I have noticed:

Thicker fluid...(MT-90/OEM) 1st to 2nd when cold wasn't great, MT-90 got much better as it warmed up. OEM...not so much. 3rd to 2nd could also be difficult. Occasional catch on the 2-3 shift with the OEM fluid as well.

Thin fluid...(MTL/Honda MTF) Little to no 2nd gear issues hot or cold, 2nd to 3rd sometimes had a slight catch (not really a crunch or grind, but I could feel it), 4th to 3rd downshift could be a little iffy.

Somewhere in the middle...(Pentosin MTF2 and MT-90/MTL mix) Pentosin felt great hot or cold, all gears, up or down. The MT-90/MTL mix (1 quart MTL and the rest MT-90) feels almost as good with only a bit more push needed on the occasional 3-2 down shift before it is fully warmed up.
MT-85 may give similar results. I wouldn't be against trying MT-85 or the Motul fluid.

I'm kinda the same right now. I'm not convinced about the MTL either and want to try the Motul. It took me a few trys to get the right fluids for my old Impreza 5-speed so I don't mind.

Update:
Okay so after a couple of days driving about, it has improved a little more. Previously i would give it a 6/10 improvement, but now i'll put it at 8/10 improvement (with 10/10 being my comparison to an OEM Intergra Type R gearbox).

1st to 2nd has improved, but only when warmed up. When stone cold it's only slightly better than stock.

2nd to 3rd will still catch (but very little). Once warmed up it feels much better.

Overall it's still a worthwhile "mod" to do, especially if you DIY. I'll give the Pentosin a try in 6 months time.

If you're not too convinced about the MTL, then switching to a thicker fluid like the Motul maybe won't make much improvement. I'd suggest staying with a 80W and try the Pentosin.

I'm thinking of buying some Motul 300 75W90 right now. How much should I buy? And will I need anything else, like maybe a new gasket? Car has about 10,750 miles on it.

I went ahead and bought 3 liters. I looked at several tranny oil threads, but no one seemed to mention how much they actually used. Then I finally got smart and looked up the DIY. The DIY said 2.2 liters is what it takes, so I figured I should be safe with 3.

As for the differential, I want to change my final drive eventually, probably after I do aluminum flywheel and carbon fiber driveshaft. So I'll just hold off until then.
