My HID kit lights are slightly mismatched?? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

So I installed the Morimoto HID elite kit from RetroFit Source. (5000k)

They look amazing, and the work was totally worth it! (I also blacked out the headlamps at the same time).

However... My right lowbeam now has a slightly yellow tint compared to my left lowbeam (pure white). Why is this happening? And is there a way to fix this?

It can happen.. The light color shifts as the time goes on, it doesn't happen much with morimoto, I've seen some cheaper ones shift in no time at all .. Salts and stuff... Contact hem, they should swap them out..

yeah hid lights do change color ever so slightly with time. my 5000k use to be very white but now there is a slight tinge of yellow which i dont mind except for how bright my side marker and switch back LEDs are.

I notice you guys are saying "over time". I kinda just did these on the Saturday (09/14/13) lol. By time do you mean a couple days?

Yeah I'm going to just live with it for now since the difference is minor. Hopefully it doesn't get worse! I was just curious about the science behind it.

Yes, it will break in over time like a car engine, I would say 100 hours of use is a fair duration. If it still didn't break in by that time, you can always get a replacement from TRS via your warranty.

Can't help much with explaining the science behind it, but Googling "hid break in" yields a lot of results. Also, hidplanet.com would be the best source for HID-related stuff.

I'd call them and have them replace the bulb. I have had a set of cheapo HID's in my other car for quite a few years now and the bulbs have not changed color on me yet.

Could it be the smoking is uneven? Or has been affected by sunlight and has yellowed on one side?

I promise you they are not as bright or the same color as when new.. It's very subtle but they do change.. Every HID bulb goes through this.. As the salts "wear" color and brightness drop..

I gave TRS a call just to inquire about the color. The response was quick and they were very informative. I'm aware that the kits from TRS are generally very high quality too.

But basically they said what you said: Just let them break in for anywhere between 30hrs to 100hrs. If they are still discolored after this period, they said I could just give them a call back and they'll just ship me new ones.

get a new set, they wont "fix" themselves. I took my 5000ks out after a week because 1 was slightly purple and the other slightly yellow. Bright and very useful just not the same color. Cheap lights = cheap quality.

No, it's the salt in the bulbs, they haven't broken in yet. It takes a while for them to color shift to the advertised temperature.

That's one thing I love about TRS: awesome customer service. You won't see that with other vendors, very rarely.

Well, yeah. You do get what you pay for when it comes to HID kits. And Morimotos are not exactly cheap, but that's because they are subjected to a more stringent testing process.

I don't know why people cheap out on HID kits. Imagine driving at night in a secluded area and having that $30-kit break on you.
