Click the link to see 15 minutes of session 4 from my tow hook. Took down lots of cars. The race ready Porsche that passes me is on slicks and ends up spinning out at 7:20 just look forward of me and you will see the 360 heading for the tire wall. After following him my speeds improved and you can see it in the video. Following the people faster than you and trying to keep up is the best learning tool. The morning wet session helped too. My best lap in this session was 1:38:36

Interesting that we used different gears yet turned similar times.

I downshift to 2nd on T1 entry and upshift to 3rd before T3 apex. Then I'm in 4th through T10-11 and downshift to 3rd at T12 entry and gas it out to the wall on the front straight. That might explain why I seemed quicker through the chicane while you rapidly closed on me through T10-11-12.

Next time I'll try your technique on T10 entry with a 5-4-3 downshift at entry.

The new Carbotech pads (10Fr/8Rr) are a tremendous improvement and confidence builder knowing that I'd have reliable, repeatable stopping power.

BTW, next time is October 5th, a Saturday. They limit attendance of non-BMW/Porsche cars so if interested, grab a spot soon so we can bother the Caymans.

I think what worked best for me and gave me the fastest speeds and lines was 2nd in turn 1, 3rd until turn turn 8 I think it is where I hit 2nd again, then up to 5th on back straight, 4th through 10 and 11, and 3rd on 12.

I need one of those fancy cameras with track time overlay stuff so I can see how my times are and how they improve.

I was using Harry's lap timer and mounting my iPhone to my dash. No fancy cam here.

I'm tempted to try 2nd through T8 but wonder if the time lost shifting would be worth it down the back straight. I'll try it next time.

Essentially, I copied rice_classic gear selection from his championship winning hot lap video. I know it's apples and oranges, but it's also the same suggested by two instructors. However, seeing how Kevin closed so quickly in T10-11-12 complex changed my mind about 3rd gear entry into 10. Of course his worked suspension and tire/wheel setup probably played a bigger part in the equation but I'll find out at the BMW/PCA day October 5th.

I only went down to 2nd if I got held up by someone. 3rd and 4th were the only 2 gears I was using.

Thanks for the nod. I'm always glad to help even if I couldn't be there to instruct. I right about how technical 10-11-12 are eh? It's easy to do, but it's not so easy to do at the limit.

You want to see what's it like when a young noob gets it wrong with his first race car at PIR in Turn 10?

That's the thing. I get the feeling that unless timed perfectly, 10 at the limit could quickly become a bad day at 11-12 with few escape options. I've really only taken 10 at 90% with that in mind having once exited 11-12 sideways but through sheer luck able to recover without stuffing it into the wall.

Sure! There's always something to learn from other's experience, good or bad.

Like many folks here I started with lapping days before I started racing. I made this video in 2004 where I transitioned from a lapper to racer to cutting the car in 3 pieces and taking it to a scrap yard. I was young dumb and technology back then wasn't what it is now. Oh yeah, and I was a dork.

Damn! Talk about tears and laughter, that had it all.

Hearing "it's gonna be a wrecker" couldn't have been the most soothing words at the time. That was a wall I never thought of as trouble before. Glad you're OK and the car did it's job protecting you. A lot of racers would've retired at that point, it was inspiring to see you make lemonade.

Brilliant video, thanks.

The next one isn't until April-ish if I remember correctly. It will be through Cascade Sports Car Club. I don't think they have next year's schedule up yet.
