Wait, so your mindset is "I can't get over for someone if I have to slow down."

This is interesting. I've learned something here; I had no idea so many Americans regard as rude the standard European practice of alerting a driver in front with flashing headlights. I grew up driving on the German autobahns and flashing headlights is a routine alert, nothing more. Of course, it's also true that it is VERBOTEN to pass on the right. Or, it used to be, decades ago, but maybe not any more. I don't know. But passing on the right was a mortal sin and would get a driver in very serious trouble. One does not do that, no matter what.

And a mere rude hand gesture could get one thrown in jail.

The basic rule that I observe is simple: NEVER balk a faster driver. Period.

If someone comes up behind me, there's only one way she got there --- she's going faster than me, no matter how fast I may be going. My job is now to get out of her way as expeditiously as possible. I'll immediately alert her that I know she's there by turning on my righthand turn signal, and proffering a brief wave of my gloved hand in the mirror. I'll speed up as needed to get past the cars on my right, and then I'll tuck in on the right, allowing her by on the left with minimum interference from me.

[Edit] In fact, this only rarely happens to me that someone comes right up behind me. If I am paying attention as I should, I'll have seen her coming for some ways, and I'll get my boot in it as needed and get out of her way before she gets close enough that she must lift to avoid hitting me. If you come zooming up behind me, I'll usually be out of your way by the time you reach me. I reckon that's my job if I'm driving attentively and well. [/Edit]

Another general related rule that I observe: When possible I avoid doing anything in my car that requires another driver to employ brakes, throttle, or steering to avoid a collision with me.

Obviously, I must stop at red lights, stop signs, yield signs, pedestrians in crosswalks, etc. That's not the same thing.

It is not my role in life to dictate the effective speed limit in the passing lane, regardless of the speed I'm going, and regardless of the posted speed limits. The signs on the Interstates around here read:

SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT

There are no qualifications on that. Reading comprehension and good manners are a problem for many, unfortunately.

NEVER balk a faster driver. Period.

End of lecture. Now, go and sin no more.

Ahh! I see.

Note to self: Read ALL the posts following the one I'm replying to...

All the same, we may yet see some who respond to my post about the puzzle. It's a cute little puzzle that may get some of our readers to expand their horizons.

You're what's wrong with America.

See @Porsche's post on what the proper way to drive is.

Anyone that is coming up on me in the left lane is going to be going much more than the limit. If there is space to get over I will. But if they get to my ass before I can move over then I have to slow down significantly to get over, they are gonna post on message forums "ARGGH WHY DO PEOPLE GET MAD AND BRAKE CHECK"

I know all people online are saints and perfect drivers. I'm not, sorry

If I catch somebody in the left lane and have to slow down, I don't get mad if they're passing people at a reasonable pace. As long as they move over once they pass the last person.

But if I am the guy that gets caught in the left lane, I always speed up, no matter how fast I'm going, because I don't want to get in someone's way if they're in a hurry.

In Germany it is illegal to use the left lane unless passing... It actually speeds things up when everyone follows the rule

What I really hate is when you're stuck in traffic on the left lane, and you're leaving enough room to the car ahead of you in case of sudden stops, and the car behind you tailgates, flashes, honks...

Ok, let me see... Even if I speed up, you'll be a total of one or two car lengths further ahead... Do they even know what they're doing?

I get the worst road rage ever because of people that cruise in the left lane.. Is it laziness?? Why... Why the fuck are you in the left lane unless your passing... Ahhhhhh.. Maybe because when I was growing up in Texas the law was, left lane passing only.. Here in Cali the right lane is the "fast lane" because no one is in it..on my trips back and forth to SoCal and here in Vegas, the 15 is full of assholes cruising in the left lane blocking and backing up traffic for miles.. If I come up to some one passing then I. Don't mind, but if I come up to some one cruising then I usually give a finger, and if they are going slower the the limit I usually just cut them off as close as I can.. Today from SoCal back to Vegas the road north wasn't bad, south was gridlocked in places, and always because some douche is going just as fast as the semi he is trying to pass.. And then there is no one behind me I'm in the left lane to make a pass around a semi and a highlander and the guy just moves on over right I front of me.. Doing 65 same as the truck.. So naturally my road rage kicks in and I'm as close as possible and give a nice finger wave as I drive by.. And I don't speed as bad as people with road rage do.. I set the cruise at 75.. So it's not like I'm riding up on people all the time.. It's something I have been working on since I moved to Cali.. Never in my life have I had road rage.. Not in the 12years of driving in Texas, not in the 5 in Georgia or the 2 in Illinois.. But three years here and I feel like I wanna bump every person out of my way that can't drive, or have no business driving.. Soooooo much traffic could be prevented if people just used that left lane to pass only.. But again I guess people are just to lazy to slightly move the steering wheel and use a indicator...

Pissed one guy off because I was sitting at a stop sign and the ass didn't signal he was turning right, so I gave him the finger.. He slams on the brakes and jumps out of the truck cussing, I get out and tell the asshole to use a blinker next time.. And said he was an asshole... We open carry in Nevada so I guess that caught his attention... Even though I'd never use it unless the guy had a weapon also, he changed his tone and said he just in a hurry and slipped his mind... How does something that you should do every time slip your mind.. My girl has no idea what a turn signal is.. Drives me up a wall.. And my old car pool cruised in the left lane.. Like immediately get on the highway and at 45 just move all the way to the left... Kills me lol...
