Toyota should offer upgrades for previous owners so we all can enjoy!

This would be the first car I purchase and I want to make it a keeper...(not quickly jump ship to another model).

Besides, I think I will be buying either the next gen wrx sti or a m3/4 w/e as my next car in the next 7 years...given on what is available.
Subaru has a guaranteed trade-in program if you go from one Subaru model to the next:
http://www.subaru.com/finance-center...ram/index.html

Hoping to take advantage of this when an improved BRZ version is out (if it makes sense for me).

trudat, I'm pretty sure Toyota could make improvements even more than boring out the FA20, they could improve the exhaust setup along with the displacement increase, I mean, every aftermarket tuner and the owners agree the stock system is quite restrictive and holds back quite a bit.

What the hell do you mean more weight? A 2.5 means it will be lighter because they are keeping the same block just boring it out, and yes a minimum of 40 more hp thats a huge bump for this car, and even if they do a turbo or other method like a hybrid system it will require more fuel to be added to the mix, and in the case of the hybrid more weight. Staying N/A and going 2.5 seems like the best option for us gear heads. Plus by 2015 they can improve the exhaust system, the aerodynamics and other things to offset any large mpg loss, I'm pretty sure with a 2.5 they could easily keep it at 24+ mpg city and 24+ highway using the same high compression stuff.

Thanks!

haha! now I am back to my confusion between BRZ Limited & FRS 10 series

This is how I see them:

FRS 10 series:
Cheaper
Lights are good
color is most rare (but i will change it in two years)
TRD performance parts
Can get 19" concept wheels on them under warranty

BRZ
Subaru
don't want heated leather seats
Like the lights
Like the colors
TRADE-IN Program
Lo Jack + cheaper insurance
Like it better with spoiler

Anyway, I think the upcoming STI BRZ is more of a "tuned by STI" version than a real STI version. You may be right that an upgrade BRZ is still years away.

I doubt there will ever be a 2.5L FA, even the new WRX will have the FA20T not a FA25T. Increasing displacement is opposing to industry trends for emissions and fuel economy goals. Much more cost effective to use the FA20T than designing a new long block. That engine would be in the BRZ right now if Toyota and Tada didn't hold Subaru to Toyota's DI. Soon as the contract is up Subaru could drop the FA20T into the BRZ sell it for the same price and put Scion in the history books. Toyota sees the handwriting on the wall hence Tada's public pontifications.

Yeah, we'll I think people originally thought the FR-S would start at $22k.

It is possible to get a stripped down RWD under $20K but that will be a really basic vehicle and I suspect the price would creep up quickly once you put any options on the car.

You don't bore a motor out to get another half liter... You get nothing as far as cubic inches off of boring, boring is just a technique to restore cylinders usually. All it would be is a stroker crank and rods. And if they go with a lighter forged crank it will probably rev even faster.

From a business standpoint, it doesn't make sense to abandon FA20 from Toyota/Scion considering the costs of R&D and Toyota sharing D4-S technology with Subaru.

I really wish that Toyota would allow a third party company performance package like what Ford allows with Roush and Shelby Mustangs, or a limited production performance car like Yenko Camaros and Chevelles from the late 60s.

love this news. needed it last year, really. i would have bought it if it had higher hp, and i think the vast majority of the fans on this forum would have preferred it with greater power too. 300hp... try again, this time, with feeling!

It is a good thing these cars have babysitters on them. I shudder to think of how many people who have bought this car as their first rwd car if it had 300 hp. Far too many people overestimate their abilities and think they are good drivers. Why does anyone feel this car needs to have 300 hp is beyond me.
250 I can see. But 300 is flat out asinine.
Not in such a light weight rwd. Again... Thank you government for the nannies or there would be a good amount of dead kids on the road with that type of power and some serious inexperience.

How about a FA30 boxer-six?

I'm no engineer. So it must be easy to slap another two cylinders on there!

Why? To compete with the Porsche Cayman and Boxster at a lower pricepoint.

Asinine? Not the word I'd personally choose. 300hp at the crank in an FR-S/BRZ (~265hp at wheels, ~2800 lbs) would put it roughly on par with a new Porsche Cayman S (2900 lbs, 325hp). Figure 0-60mph in about 4.8-4.9 seconds. It'd be amazing, but not supercar-stupid-blink-once-and-it's-lethal. Sure I wouldn't buy that for a high school kid, but rich parents do that crap already. How is that an unsafe power level with reasonable summer rubber?

Come on man, give me a break with comments like that. Using your logic it's a miracle that teenagers and kids in their 20s weren't killing themselves left and right during the muscle car days of the 60s
