If they do bump it up to a 2.5L it's definitely going to be a new motor. But i wonder how well the DI system will do.

Regardless...

The current FA20 is a bulletproof motor(other than the DI issue solved with a tune). Probably designed in that fashion to grab the attention of the tuners and such. I strongly think the bean counters let some stuff slip for the sake of getting the car out and it becoming popular. I dont expect that motor to be as awesome and resilient to high HP turbo build in it's next version.

So a next gen 86 will probably be slightly faster via displacement or hybrid or both, but I don't think it will have as much potential as the current one for tuning and customization.

Hell if it dropped 200 lbs and lost 10-20 horsepower so that the engine became tank like reliable with no worries about overheating I'd trade mine in.

I guess that's the base trim in Japan plus a tune though...

You can get a lot more of a performance tuned 2.5 boxer engine, and most importantly you also exponentially increase the power benefit of aftermarket mods.

I like Subaru, but if future generations of this car are going to be pigeon holed to a specific type of engine (boxer) and make due with the ones they have at that moment due to the lack of resources of the company to develop another platforms, then I'm all for Toyota taking the project on their own hands and leave Subaru out of this.

Because that engine is not anywhere near as efficient as the block they went with. Not to mention it's down on power in comparison. A lot went into the design of the 2.0.

Hopefully they will listen to us fans before going ahead with anything radical like they did originally with the GT86/FT86, you know, how they asked all the gear heads what would make the car feasible for them. I think N/A would be the best way, same weight but 50 more hp would really really make this car even better.

That'll suck for you BRZ guys if they end up dropping the Subaru brand all together and keep it Toyota..your cars will probably be worth more money tho because of the limited production

The extra 50hp are nice, but my cheapo mathematics are making me drool on the possible 180+ lbs/ft of torque...

A 2.5 will mean lower mpg, a little more weight up front, likely not a huge bump in hp, lower revs (or more money for the same revs or higher), and as noted before a lux tax in a lot of areas.
