Trying to deal with aftermarket FI in Australia is a nightmare.
there would be no point unless the mark up the prices by a lot.

The point would be it would get around a lot of state's emission laws and modification rules if the car had come even in limited release with the blower from the factory.

The Subaru flat 6's are the same width and only slightly longer and higher than the FA20 - they will fit in the engine bay easily, and they are (in the EZ36s case) over 1 and a half litres more capacity. They are also lightweight - weighing about the same as an FA20 with an intercooled turbo kit

That would be an interesting choice. Probably would give the car a static weight distribution similar to an IC turbo FA20 as well.

Could you PM me documentation of this? Or post a link to it in this thread? Could save my ass (and others') in the future.

Sure makes it sound like Toyota doesn't have much faith in the boxer motor. They clearly recognized its value in terms of meeting the COG goals but seem open to replacing it in lieu of sacrificing the COG benefits.

Well they probably realize they are limited in what they can make Subaru do. And they don't have the ability to mass produce boxer engines like them. So it's probably still cheaper and easier for them to go inline if it comes to that.

Check out these articles So many rumors out there.
Quote:
Listen up FR-S fans, you might want to take a seat for this one. According to Automotive News, Toyota has no plans on building a convertible version of the FR-S. It gets worse. They also have decided against building a turbo/supercharger/fast version of the FR-S as well. They’ve been “deemed too expensive for it’s limited volume.” Consider your dreams of a TRD FR-S that’s actually fast, thoroughly crushed.

Their refusal to build a convertible is strange considering their main competition is a little roadster called the Miata. Keeping a hard-top affords the FR-S some bonuses the Miata doesn’t, like better chassis characteristics. Toyota clearly considered the car, but I guess it they just couldn’t justify the cost to put it into production.
What’s more upsetting is that they’re not going to be releasing a performance edition of the car. While the article goes on to say that Toyota is building a new sports car with the help of BMW (Mark V Supra?!), that’s years away. The lack of power is the one stopping point that keeps the FR-S out of the league of high performance cars. It’s a shame we won’t be getting one from Toyota due to cost.
If you’re the type to hang on to the last possible sliver of hope… Technically, the article says “A Toyota-badged convertible or turbo-charged performance version of the Scion FR-S coupe was under consideration, but was deemed too expensive for its limited volumes.” Scion is a different badge. So hold on to hope you starry eyed dreamers.

Not to get your hopes up, but, it sounds like Toyota intends to build more sports cars. At least, they’re considering it. According to CarAdvice.com.au, Tatsuya Tata, the chief engineer of the GT86 project confirmed that Toyota has started development on two new sports cars: one that’s a level higher than the FR-S (think Supra), and another that slots below the FR-S.

The sub FR-S is still in the very early stages of development. What we do know is that Toyota is dead set on it being rear-wheel drive. That’s especially encouraging. Considering that such a car would be smaller than FR-S, it’d probably be a two-seat roadster. Tada confirms that it won’t be so small that it’s a kei car, although, a next-gen Cappuchino would kick-ass. Instead it’ll be a “city sized coupe.” So… A Yaris sized rear wheel driver. Who knows that they’ll call it? The MR-S? FR-Celica?
The kicker is they plan on listing it for under $20,000. I don’t know about you, but the thought of a new sports car at Honda Civic prices is extremely exciting.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, there’s the BMW/Toyota sports car that we’ve been hearing about for months. If you’re holding out for a new Supra, this is thing looks like your closest hope.
Toyota’s definitely up to something. Hopefully we’ll get to see the BMW and Toyota concept at the Tokyo Autoshow in November. We’ll see if Toyota pursues the smaller car in the coming months.

I am genuinely glad I leased my car. This is what I was concerned with. Something to make me switch vehicles happily.

Those cars would be years away from being available assuming these rumors are even true. We have not even seen a concept yet. Probably at least 3-5 years away, with my money on being closer to 5.

In 5 years a Nissan Versa will probably cost $20k+.

True.

Plus given the revival of this light rwd handling niche....chances are honda, nissan and mazda could bring something more appealing. Not to mention the known revival of supra coming back. I would just hate that if i buy my frs now and then two years later comes the 2.5 liter version. If they were addons then thats alright by me. Toyota should offer upgrades for previous owners so we all can enjoy!

This would be the first car I purchase and I want to make it a keeper...(not quickly jump ship to another model).

Besides, I think I will be buying either the next gen wrx sti or a m3/4 w/e as my next car in the next 7 years...given on what is available edit: (as a second car).
