At this point, he will probably never make it either.

I did just yesterday read about FL2K13 in Bradenton later this year. There are only two things in Texas, and neither are fast cars. At least I hit the drag strip on Saturday.

Think about the shape of a connecting rod, during compression of the rod all of the force is distributed along the rod half of the big end bearing. When the rod is in tension all of the force is distributed along the cap half of the big end bearing. If the bolts are parallel to that force, they take all of it. By rotating the break line for the cap, the bolts no long take all of that force in tension which can make the overall assembly stronger. This wont really help the engine make more power at the present rpm limit, but it will make the rods able to withstand higher rpm as they'll be less likely to separate while trying to slow the piston as it approaches top dead center.

The rest of the time the force is squarely against the base of the connecting rod, either from the crankshaft pushing up or the piston pushing down. Under those conditions, all the bolts are doing is holding the rod end in position so the bearings don't move.
Tilting the rod end adds shearing stress (across the bolt), so yes, it would seem that this layout is harder on the bolts. Depending on the angle, it could also put shearing stress on the bolts whether the force is from the crank pulling or the piston pushing.
I see what you're saying here. What you need to add to that though, is that the forces aren't directly added together and the sheer stress is less then if the cap was perpendicular to the forces. Also the bolts should be able to handle that sheer better then the tension.

If you add in the cracked caps that are common on powdered rods, there is actually very little (comparative) sheer stress making it to the bolts.
