Odd, I know ECUTek had to develop special code for those features that the tuners wouldn't have access to. The tuners have the ability to enable and adjust those features, but not add the functionality all together. That's my understanding, at least.

My question is how do most people know how to tune their own car? I may be tech savvy, but I have no idea when it comes to tuning my engine, lol.

You open the rom in TunerPro on your PC to edit it if you want (and know how) to modify the tables. Be careful though, if you don't know what you're doing you could end up with a very expensive mistake.

Learning to tune isnt a cut and dry thing. Alot of guts and experimenting is what it takes in the beginning. Then practice, practice, practice. I have been tuning on the order of 6-7 years now, and have had my hands on most of the big imports. DSM, Evo, mazdaspeed, Subaru, Honda. Then I started expanding from there.... It certainly takes a certain kind of person to really get into this kind of thing. You cant be arrogant in this business as that will most likely end up in making a fatal mistake.
I am a Systems engineer by day, so my professional experience certainly feeds my side business. But there are other aspects to becoming a tuner. Such as business modeling, customer service, etc etc. There are alot of good books you could read to get your feet wet, but its usually best to leave tuning to the pro's until you have some confidence in your own ability. Alot of good info on tuning other subarus if you go poke over at the Nasioc, and the same can be said about EVOs on evoms. It will give you and idea of how the ecus work, and what things are actually tweaked. But beyond that, you need a very good understanding on how modern EFI engines operate. |

Those features will require code patches to the rom.

typically you'd take these 'base' maps and tweak them to suit your vehicle. if you're not comfortable doing that you can pay someone else to. in any case the end result is a tune that is probably a bit cheaper than what's out there now, but more importantly, you own it. in 5 years when something changes, you can make the required changes yourself (or pay anyone you choose to do so). no more being forced to return to the tuner you may or may not even like or be able to get ahold of. |
