Every-time the clutch rattle thread comes up everyone says "It's normal don't worry about it". The thing is, nobody every provides a reason WHY its considered normal. Nobody has provided a solution for it yet either.

Because they are mechanical parts with free play. Example, you can crawl under your car while it's stopped and rotate the driveshaft back and forth a bit, that's the free play, and that is only ONE of the reason the whole drivetrain is noisy, that and because this car has very little sound deadening. The drivetrain is under constant load and unload when you drive. The clutch has springs that are also under constant load and unload, that can also make noise.

You mention the sound deadening but surely that would do little to hide the flywheel / clutch rattle these cars have. And don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting its defective or broken, I'm just saying it's odd. It's unusual for even the cheapest of new cars to make noises like this. |

FWD also make less noise because they are drive-shaft less.

This "rattle" noise is happening on mine as well every so often when I shift into Neutral. As it being normal on a RWD MT car I cant say as my previous 2 RWD MT cars didn't do that at all.

![]() My 350Z made all the noise the FR-S did. The worst is on multiple speed bumps with lot's of clutch in and out. Anybody familiar with clutch noise on some Ducatis?? Premium bikes with noisy drivetrain? It's just the way things are.

I'm not unfamiliar with cars in the least. None of them have made noises like this unless they where in need of repair. Your answer is a prime example of what I was saying. Lots of people pipe up and say "don't worry about it, it's normal" and I'm not arguing that. It's just that nobody can give me a specific reason (that isn't their own pure SPECULATION) as to what is causing the rattle and so far nobody has even given speculation as to what might remedy it. Frankly I'm not concerned. I just think people should avoid saying "Don't worry about it, I heard it's normal" when they don't even really know the actual cause. |

It'd be faster if you just said you're not sure what causes the rattle. If you knew, you would be able to identify the part or parts that could be re-worked / modified / replaced to eliminate the noise. It could be a tight clearance on a dust shield for all we know. I'd be interested to hear from the guys who have upgraded to a lightweight flywheel and aftermarket clutch.
This isn't a 15 year old jeep with a combination of parts that are a little sloppy that culminate in a problem you have a hard time diagnosing... this is a brand new car. |

Why was this important? 1) the poor tune resulted in the revs dropping too fast. The IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) was not keeping RPMs high enough and it dropped close to/below 600. 2) dual mass clutch/flywheel setup tend to make more noise, especially when the entire drivetrain is shaking abnormally (from a low idle) My car makes this exact same noise. I know the low revs between shifts with the AC on is causing it... I'm just too lazy to take it to the dealer to have them fix the idle issue. If this is caused by RPMs too low after a shift into neutral, it's an ECU tune issue plain and simple. And FWIW: my car's idle drops to "normal" about 10-15 seconds after an overnight cold startup. -alex |

In case you don't know what a dual mass flywheel is:
http://www.zf.com/brands/content/en/...dmf_SACHS.html The root cause (if this is happening when shifting into neutral) is either a ECU tune (most likely), or a bad transmission/clutch design that is prone to noise when load input is changed suddenly (least likely). -alex |
