normally i'd agree w/ you. but this particular 25k piece of property is where 75% of my income goes from gas to bills. if anyone is allowed to damage it let alone touch it, it's me. so i'm irritated even at the smallest dings because I spend so much of my time and money making it nice, and some random person who has no association with it creates an imperfection. its just not right.

It's the difference between car enthusiast and Prius drivers really.
Hey now! I traded in my 2012 Prius C for my frs lol. I did manage 77 mpg the DAY I traded it in so I think it was like telling me " hey man, look, I'm good at what I do but I know you can't polish a turd...."

I like to get dangerously close to the curb on an end spot if I can. I started doing this years ago. So long ago, it's kind of a game for me now. This can be dangerous to your door though, if you're lowered. I found that out the hard way. If it's a really wide spot, I'll get fairly close and put the passenger's side to the curb if I don't have a passenger.

The best is when you can find a spot that's up against a curb and has a light pole splitting it and the adjacent spot. There is just such a spot in a strip mall lot not far from where I work. Looking at it, you would question whether a Mini could fit in there or not. I park my Tiburon there all the time. In 4 years of frequenting that lot, I've never seen anything else but motorcycles park there.

There are a couple of people at my work that drive luxery cars and I park next to them knowing they won't dent my car and I won't dent their car .. In fact we have a little thing going on were we just park next to each other because each of us has received a door dent from other employees.

My sister got her volvo pretty much run over in a grocery store parking lot, now she understands why I park in the back of the parking lot next to the BMW's.

My parking rules:
  • If parking area is not level always park at top of incline. This will keep crap like rouge shopping carts from rolling down the parking lot like a missile and slamming into your car.
  • Always park in end spot, when parking pull as close to curb as possible to give the side with a parking space extra room for @ssholes parking next to you
  • If parking lot has islands park next to one and follow procedures for parking next to curb on end spot. If parking lot is inclined park on the lower side of island. This allows island to be used as a blocking source.
  • Dont double park. There are people out there who will f up your car on purpose for doing this.
  • Never ever park in a situation where lot is inclined and there is an open space above your car. This just creates a situation for gravity to swing someones door into your car.
  • Dont go out of your wat to park out in BFE. There are too many @ssholes that like to park next to you on purpose when they see this. It also makes your car a target when its way out in the middle of nowhere on its own. If I follow my other guidelines there is no need for this anyways.

If you do get a ding Paintless Dent Removal isn't bad. After one year, I took my car to the dealers collision center and they took out all the door dings for under $100. I still try to park where I won't get dinged, but PDR is an option for accidents.

I always try to park parallel in 1st slot.
I consider people who park parallel are better driver, and being in front of them means they can see my car clearly.
Even if you got hit most likely it would only be small bump on the plastic bumper.

If no parallel spot available then I would proceed to the mid farthest parking area and park really close to the curb and other techniques discussed here.
Not too far so it doesn't stand out but far enough from all the lazy people who most likely will open their door so wide to get their ass out.
And also try to find space where everyone can see the car or where cameras can see it.

This is so true! It's like no matter how far you park cause you want to be by yourself, there is always that ONE guy that just has to park beside you for whatever reason.
