I'm not so sure I would agree with your statement. 100 octane will certainly resist detonation caused from igniting timing being to far advanced, and super lean conditions, better than say 91/93/94 can. Remember it takes more advance, the greater the octane. My guess, based on reading some things here, is that the super lean condition(20:1) that presents itself when the throttle goes closed, plus the super advanced timing(39 degrees is what ive seen)at that very moment seem to contribute to the detonation at throttle tip in. So in the end, I truly think running race gas or something equivalent may prevent the detonation until Subaru releases a proper ecu update to correct this. Or just shift slower in the mean time?

True, but I don't think this engine was tuned per say for 100 octane, but I was only suggesting like others have that it may prevent the condition due to improper timing/throttle maps. Who knows really, all I want to do is prevent the condition until Subaru puts out a TSB for it.

Just because your load drops at tip-in does not always mean it's bad.

I agree. And what you are saying is that the South African TSB is pure B.S. So how are the injectors burning up? Well, detonation under load due to the overall crappy factory tune. It stays in closed loop too long, has an unfilled ignition retard table, a hole in the torque band, and god knows what else to meet the crazy emission laws. A good tune can fix all that and still pass the sniffer. So what do we do? Wait on the OEM to save our A$$? About 1 out of 100 people who buy these cars drive them hard. Of those most will ditch the car by 60k miles. There is little to no incentive for the OEM's to tackle this issue especially with the carbon emissions hurdle. Forget about the warranty, tune it bolt on a header and just make the car enjoyable or drive like those other 99 people.

@regal You have a weird way of looking at things. I never said the TSB is bullshit. I've been backing it since it was released. Stop trying to twist my words. The only twisted thing round here is your perception/head.
What will it take for you to drop this pointless mission? Do you really have nothing better to do? |

My way of looking at things may seem weird to you because you have no experience with Subaru engines. Every new performance engine they have released in the last 10 years has had detonation issues. This is very much a performance engine and very susceptible to detonation with the high compression ratio, just as vulnerable as buying a wrx. The only pointless mission I see is you defending Toyota, if you are so sure of the "fix" then why are we sitting hear 6 months later without a TSB or a flash waiting at the dealer?

You're getting better; rather than being completely wrong, at least one-fifth of your diatribe was somewhat accurate. Keep it up. |

My seals came in finally. I am getting more concerned as I started to have a few idle dips today.
its very hot out as well. For those with an issue can you hear any engine whine or noise before the meltdown?
