I think this thread has gone a tad-bit out of hand, the people here who have the FR-S and have had an issue must report this as much as possible so everyone can benefit, otherwise babying your car won't help the issue or anyone else. Don't you guys want to have fun with a car designed for fun?

Soooooooooooo I am really starting to wonder just how prevalent this problem is.

Should I wait to get a tune for my car? I want to buy a tune but if a DI seal problem happens I would most assuredly be denied a warranty claim if they find out I tuned the car.

Honestly I have not been driving my car a lot and right now I only have about 1500 miles on it.

I have had one weird issue with it that happened at about 1000 miles.

I was driving down the road at ~35mph when suddenly if felt like the car (or maybe just engine) started shaking and shuddering. I tried shifting up and down but it did not go away. So I slowed the car to a stop (but did not turn if off) and got out to see what was going on. When the car stopped the shaking/shuddering stopped. When I exited the vehicle it smelled odd. Not quite like a slipping/burning clutch. I had never smelled anything like it before so it is hard to explain.
I got back in the car and drove slowly away and the shaking/shuddering never came back.
I have checked the car over thoroughly and have not found any leaks or loose parts/connections.

It was very weird and disturbing but since that one time has not happened again.

Sure you can dismiss these failures as abused rental track cars but the fact remains, they rent many cars that endure the same type of use and not all of them falter this frequently or consistently.

Many people are forgetting that cars are blowing seals that have never seen the track. The TSB says detonation occurs when shifting at redline.

I have a hunch EVERYBODY posting in this thread has performed the operation described in the TSB that results in detonation. The sky may not be falling but boy does it look ominous.

Which leads me to believe that this issue it not affecting 100% of all cars. Otherwise there would tens of thousands of people with this issue. I have redlined my car twice. My car has not exhibited any of the symptoms so far. There are people with 20K+ miles and lots of track time that have not had the issue either. So it could be limited to a specific batch of cars (which is my guess). At least that is what I am hoping. There is not much I can do about it unless my car exhibits the symptoms.

Everyone who is concerned about this needs makes to make every effort to pop their engine, stock, not on the track. Dozens of broken engines they won't touch is a lawsuit.

No biggie, No TSB needed. Who cares you'll have another new car by then, right ? No explanation needed, you have the cash to not care.
I got an extended warranty. If my engine gets totaled, I'll get a new one, or a swap. Or a new car. Cars are meant to be driven, this one was designed with the enthusiast in mine. It's not perfect, but all of these cases (without thorough investigation or information) aren't going to keep me from enjoying my car.

people are so quick to cry foul. but hey, more power to them. perhaps they'll do all the work to get toyota to give some attention to this problem. but in the meantime, i'm fine with my car; not going to be worried at all. :happy0180:

A Toyota/Subaru that is riddled with unreliability problems.... Now I feel like I've entered the Twilight Zone!

Goddamnit I miss Honda.

So, just called my dealer and talked to one of the reps I usually deal with. He has a VERY similar TSB for the car, the catch is that he says the check engine light needs to be on for them to do the upgrade. He doesn't get it either and he says it would make sense to take care of it BEFORE destroying the direct injectors, but he would have to follow the right steps and couldn't do it unless I had a code. He said if the DI was failing before the code, obviously Toyota would repair it under warranty and do the ECU upgrade, so it's not like Toyota is against us driving these cars hard. Sadly, it doesn't look like Subaru is as forgiving.

I spent a lot of time on this yesterday, reading looking at what is causing this. The lean condition is not something that I personally would ever have to worry about as autox is one shift and done. My spirited driving is up palomar which involves one shift again and leaving in second. I'm assuming that is the reason why Toyota hasn't touched it. I'm not saying it makes sense, but it is not a condition that 95% of owners will ever deal with.

A good step right now would be for people to write Toyota and state is as a concern, mention the TSB (which shows that they know it's an issue), and find out what it would take for it to just be a standard software upgrade. There will be people open tracking the car and that's when it will come into play or with those who do a lot of spirited shifting while DDing. Other than that, it really isn't going to effect most of us.

Can someone just move this thread to the "issues" section already or lock it down and point everyone to the other DI thread? This is just paranoia at this point.

Agreed. It really isn't gonna be a problem for most of us
