A 'tip-of-my-hat' to you guys with an automatic. When I bought my FR-S 10 months ago it was a given that I wanted a manual transmission. I've thoroughly enjoyed my car but more and more I've thought about what it would be like to drive an automatic, especially with the paddles. This past Friday I went back to my favorite dealership in Sierra Vista to test drive an automatic. I really enjoyed having the option to drive it which ever way I wanted to. I came away convinced that was the way to go. I will probably be trading in my '13 for a '14 with an automatic.

haha I was about to do the exact opposite! Was gonna trade in my AT BRZ with all the goodies for a MT FR-S/BRZ.

The paddles need to be bigger imo. Was hard to reach during Auto-X.

I can't comfortably use my paddles in hard turns and intersections, most of the time I have my hand near the shifter and use that for both directions on gear changes. I would like to hear something definitive on whether Sport mode changes behavior in M mode.

I feel same way. Test drove both and was amazed at how good the AT is in such a reasonably priced sports car. Couldnt be happier with my AT purchase especially since my wife can drive it too and that had a huge impact on us agreeing on this purchase.

Psjohndoe,
I thought the fact the AT software does not change behavior of shifts (shift speed) based on if you are in sport or normal in M mode had already been established.

I read a review on the BRZ auto that was very favorable. Does anyone know if there is any difference in the programming of the autos between FR-S and BRZ? I've tested an FR-S and was impressed. Just wondering if there is a difference.

i only use sport mode at lights or passing. Ive noticed it doesn't shift til 3k rpm period. so mpg will be hurt. as far as longevity It might be better for the car because its not shifting as much but its just a theory.

I think the BRZ and FRS AT mechanical components and software are identical.

Sport mode moves the automatic shift points to a higher rpm. Manual mode lets you decide when to shift so would override anything to do with leaving sport mode switched on at the same time except for maybe the way the anti-stall downshifting operates. I'll have to try it out now that it's been brought up.

I've heard several people state the cam phasing advances sooner in sport mode, even with manual selected. No concrete fact though. Maybe a tuner'll chime in who's seen the cam timing.

Too bad, I found Sport mode to be unusable for anything other than straight line acceleration. The normal Drive mode does a great job on the highways, the only time I feel that I need to go to Manual mode is driving at highway speeds on steep inclines, where it likes to shift into 6th when it cannot maintain speed in that gear. If you know you're going to pass in Drive mode you can just hit the gas one to two seconds early to allow it to select the proper gear for the speed you want to pass.

A great, convenient feature of the BRZ's A/T is that I can shift down using the paddle even if I'm not in manual mode. The tranny will return to full auto soon after. Great for passing or getting extra power without having to go Sport or full manual or mashing the throttle.

Someone posted about using Sport in stop and go traffic to avoid frequent shifting to and fro 1st and 2nd. Might try this on the next traffic jam and see how it goes...
