I drive my car HARD!! But I also maintain it meticulously and do all oil changes and fluid swaps way ahead of schedule. I also double clutch downshifts and always match up gear speeds and never abuse the clutch. Driving "hard" doesn't mean abusing the car...

Your numbers are a little off Gary.

MT: 25mpg EPA Average.
100,000/25 = 4,000 gals

AT: 28mpg EPA Average.
100,000/28 = 3,571 gals

Savings with AT (4,000 - 3,571 =) 429 gals

429 x $3.75 per gallon/premium gas = $1,609 for 100,000 miles.

Note: in real world driving, the difference in MPG AT to MT appears to be much smaller.

You are not suspending general physical laws here. The harder you stress something the more wear and tear occurs. This happens whether or not the car "was built to play hard".

As to what is "too hard" it is a tradeoff between money+time-in-the-shop vs enjoyment of the vehicle. If you think drifting and releasing streams of carbon particles into the atmosphere is a good use of your time on the planet go with that. If you place a greater value on expenditure of money on family, friends, causes, education, and protecting the air and water, etc.. play a little less hard.

I consider mpg numbers for an mt nothing but a ballpark figure, since it's entirely up to the driver how much gas they burn. I've had a 2001 corolla as my backup car for years, and it's supposed to be a little over 8L per 100km and I average 5.5 without even babying it.

Maybe buy a Prius if those are your priorities. I'm a firm believer in live and let live but the whole point of this car is having fun and being a little juvenile at heart.

You're not hurting the car. I'm pretty sure most of us will not exceed the engineering tolerances of this car. Of course there is always a few who can.

In other words, anytime anyone even mentions environment and science, you feel intimidated and oppressed. Note that I never mentioned my priorities you simply erroneously inferred them. As far as the mindless statement "live and let live" that doesn't really work when we share the same air and water - does it?

Yeah, I was thinking real world numbers. Usually the difference between an MT and a AT is about 1 mpg. I routinely get 35-36 mpg highway and about 28 around town (although I live in a rural area so "around town" doesn't include a lot of stop and go or lights). It seems reasonable that a AT would be about 1 mpg above those numbers.

Regardless, choosing an AT over a MT for mileage is just a lazy excuse for saying "I don't like to drive a MT...can't be bothered". It's not for everyone.

Intimidated and oppressed? What are you talking about????

I wasn't saying "your" priorities as "you" but for anyone who has the priorities that you listed.

You obviously read way to far into my comment. The point was that this car is made for people who love to drive and have fun doing so. So for people with THOSE priorities this car is perfect.

If you feel the urge to discuss the environment further along with the air we breath and water we drink I'm sure there is a really awesome forum out there to satisfy you fully.

You're fine.. The car is built for "fun" and can take this kind of driving style in stride. Also..
The stock tires will absorb most of the abuse as they easily lose traction and relieve the stress on the drivetrain.. So no harm done..
