It's why we usually do top offs for free =/. My bro has a SHO and he said it's round about the same for him... I mean maybe I'm incorrect in saying it's a common symptom with all DI and DI FI cars but in my experience the bulk of them do it =/.
My 335xi is turboed N52 with DI. Does not drink oil so far with 30k on it. However, I am aware of BMW motors drinking oil in general. The E36 M3 eats about 1 quart every 1000miles. New M3 drinks oil, but then these are not even DI motors its just a german car thing because my friend's C63 takes a quart every 1k or so too. DI has the injector fouling problem that I heard of but the oil thing was news to me and not exactly good news at that.

I have not owned many cars in my life but none of the Japanese cars my family and I owned drink a drop of oil. Hopefully that remains true with the FR-S too. Mazda RX? all drink oil because of the rotary but I consider that car an exception to the rule because it is not a conventional motor.

I will test drive the FR-S and BRZ just to get a feel for when it comes. If it is as good as it seems I may sell the E36 M3 and get the FR-S or BRZ as my fun car. Would be nice to have a new car with no age related issues that I can thrash in autox and other racing venues.

I did some quick searches, and found several references that an oil burn rate of 1qt every 1,000 miles is acceptable and within spec for the flat 4.

This is presumably NOT intentional burn designed to be there.

This is also the same burn rate BY DESIGN of the RX-8.

Why does the 8 get so much oil hate?

if you buy the frs at 23k msrp, then youre being taxed a lot more.

in the end, it might still be a better deal to sell it yourself, but it also becomes a hassle.
This depends on the state, because not all states allow this kind of tax benefit.

Agreed, in the 4 years I had one, it didn't use that much oil considering all the hype, maybe a liter every 2-3 tanks (1000kms).

I know the cat was due to the coils, but coils should not fail at 20K (or even 50K!), big fail for Mazda on that one. If I kept the car, I would have done the GM Coil conversion.
And I never paid dealer pricing for their $400 plugs (paid $130 Cdn for a set locally), but still they are outrageously expensive at $32/plug vs $6-10 for other high-end plugs.

Back on topic though, be glad the FT will not have these issues.

You have to change the spark plugs in the rx8 every 30k miles? Wow!

That really is a recurring theme there when it comes to new cars. Hey, at lest they can import cars sooner than we can at 15 years vs 25 years here, that counts for something, right?

trade in RX8 for FR-S???
lets see...

the FR-S...
-won't need a new engine every 50k miles.
-will get WAY more than 12 MPG.
-won't need oil every gas-tank refill.
-won't break down every 2 weeks.
-has more torque LOL!
-fixing it won't be as much as the rotary engine.
-it's lighter.
-doesn't have Ford parts.

what was the question again?

Not sure about SoCal but I looked at San Fran and for the same standard of living as here in the Midwest I would need to make 2x as much. Not that feasible. Cool state to visit. But crappy housing market, high state taxes, crapy car regulations, horrible smog (SoCal), lots of traffic...etc. Cool to visit with a lot to do and lots of outdoor things to do. But I would rather live one state north of you.
