Pretty much a sidegrade =/ like everyone else was saying, better fuel mileage, better torque potential, it won't consume oil as much as an RX-8 (This thing WILL eat oil though, it's just an unfortunate part of owning a DI car. It'd be worse if it was DI & FI, more specifically, turbo'd.), and slightly better handling emphasis on 'slightly'.
But if you want it do it bro. Shouldn't need a second opinion on how to spend your money, end of the day it is YOUR money .

When you say the RX8's "go for" $x, is that retail or trade in value? If you plan to do a trade in, prepare for not getting offered much $$ for whatever car you bring them.
The two cars are similar but different in many ways. I say if you like the 86 when it comes out, go for it. After a test drive you'll know your answer (one way or another). |

The RX8 is heavy and old and automatic...get rid of it ASAP!
The FRS\BRZ is no way like a RX8...the RX8 has that weird door on the side...not really a true coupe...but hey it is a RWD..so.... You know the FRS\BRZ is about the size of a 370Z right? Its more like a 2+2 370z but about 600 pounds lighter... |

The FRS/BRZ seems to be a very small car. I would only get it if I did not have to put someone in the back for any long period of time. Quite honestly I'd probably remove the back seats anyway and just leave the spcae for storage. I also do not buy the first year of any new model. Its almost always better to let the company do their first year fixes before getting one. |

When I say "go for", yes, I'm speaking in terms of retail value and I definitely understand what you mean, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it, you know? If the car handles the road anything like the RX8 I'll be completely sold on it after a test drive.

It's a common complaint with DI cars especially with DI FI cars. What do you have besides the M3? Cause none of the M3's have been direct injected yet, at least not until the tri-turbo M3 comes out. But yeah working for BMW I can tell you every motor other than the N51's (which still eat oil but only during the engine break-in and a little afterward once in a blue) drink down about a quart between LOF's. It's why we usually do top offs for free =/. My bro has a SHO and he said it's round about the same for him... I mean maybe I'm incorrect in saying it's a common symptom with all DI and DI FI cars but in my experience the bulk of them do it =/. |

Your not the only one buddy. I sold my RX8 a month or two ago. I had problems left and right tho so I sold it while it was still in good shape and worth the money (new engine, transmission, clutch, you name it). I talked about it before but anywho, I don't regret my decision one bit. I bought a temp car (another 300zx) and can easily get my money back from when I'm ready to buy the FRS and sell this 300zx (1 of 103 made this color).
What I'm saying is, sell it while our ready and it's not having problems. It sounds like a lot of people are going to be selling their rx8, so the value has a good chance of going down a little when the dealers start gettin them left and right. I know I made the right choice. I've wanted this FRS for to long and I'm ready! |

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...7873#post77873 http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...638#post103638 I owned one for a few years; never had any problems with it and it was a blast. Though the FT86 is a little less powerful, I expect it to be even more fun thanks to its lower mass and shorter wheelbase. An additional FT86 advantage is efficiency, but given that you only drive ~2500 miles/year, the fuel savings won't amount to much. Anyway, if you don't need the RX8's roomier rear seats or suicide doors, and if you have the budget for a new car, then the FT86 probably makes sense. As always, test drive before you buy. Happy holidays and good luck. |

Put it up for sale now and bank the money. If you go to trade it in on the FR-S/BRZ you will get r8ped by the dealer.

The reasons why I am even considering a trade-in of my tC are because of those two points - it's the same manufacturer (scion) and mine has over 130k+ miles, so not a lot of people are interested. If I were you, I would just go with the private sale route |

I just returned my leased RX-8 a month ago and got a 2012 Genesis Coupe 2.0T to hold me until I decide if I want an FR-S/BRZ.
The RX-8 is a fantastic handling car but not great as a daily driver other than the extra seats. My own experience with the RX-8 is that it suffers from horrible fuel consumption and the rotary has issues. I never needed to have the motor changed but had to replace coils and the cat and it went through 3 sets of $400 spark plugs in 80,000kms. I also believe the engine was slowly dying when my lease was due. My new Genesis Coupe gets twice the range of the RX-8 and is reliable with no finicky requirements like the RX-8 (check the oil every fillup, don't start and shut down when cold, fuel starvation on track, etc..) Other than the smaller back seats (I have 2 kids anyways), I think the FT will be a way better car than the RX-8. Very similar power to weight ratios (whoever stated the RX-8 is heavy has no clue), and excellent chassis and suspension for both cars. Fuel consumption will be way better with the FT and the FT will stand the test of time much better than any RX-8 due to the conventional piston engine. The FT probably handles more like a Miata (I have owned two) but with more power. The RX-8 was more stable than a Miata and not as twitchy especially on high speeds on track. FT for the win. No brainer for me, just waiting for them to come out so I can test drive and decide if I keep the Genesis or trade for the FT. |

keep in mind that there's a tax incentive to do a trade-in.
trade-in scenario: frs: 23k rx: 10k trade in value (just as an example) cost of frs: 23-10= 13k total cost of the frs is 13k + tax. if you buy the frs at 23k msrp, then youre being taxed a lot more. in the end, it might still be a better deal to sell it yourself, but it also becomes a hassle. |
