However, I had a longer drive a few days ago (went maybe 50-60 km) and my TPMS light never turned on. I called the dealership and they said it's possible that the TPMS in my car was never activated. I'm going in either tomorrow or Friday to confirm.

But if mine was never activated, then good news for me. I won't have ot worry about putting them on new wheels!

Anyone else have this happen to them?
I've had my winter steelies/tires on for 2 weeks & I commute to work 20-25kms each way & my TPMS light has only come on twice. Once where it was flashing & by the time I got home it went away & the other time it stayed on. I have my stock tires 2 feet away. When it's blinking just turn the car off then on again let it blink for 1-2 mins it will turn solid then go away I'm going to assume that the system just resets itself if the sensors are near

If you read earlier in the thread, you'll see that our TPMS are only turned on when the wheels are rotating, so that means if your stock rims are sitting in the garage, they're not actually sending any data to the car because they're off.

Hmm, it seems rather odd then that when I drive into my garage with my non rotating wheels in the corner, my TPMS light is off the next time I start the car and it doesn't come back on for several hours and km. after I have been away from the garage? Having seen the Scion training manual on this subject there was no mention of the tires having to rotate in order to generate a signal?

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...4&postcount=62

There is reference that the signal repeat rate is different for a stationary tpms wheel vs. a rotating TPMS wheel.

Isn't amazing how a yellow light on our gauge cluster causes so much ruckas.
Not to mention by our own doing. LOL!!!!!!!!!!

Well,it was interesting today. When I restarted the car and went out of the garage I must have missed a TPMS peep, because the light was on when I started the car and it stayed on after I left. When I came home and went in the garage, I waited a minute or before shut down, and the light went out. So I guess I must have picked up a TPMS peep! Summer tires were still not rotating sitting about 6 feet away.

I have had my winters on now for about a month and my TPMS light has only come on once. I know that the system works because it did detect a low condition about 2-3 weeks before I made the switch from the OE rims and tires. The wheels with them are at the nose of my car in the garage.

Old thread, but I found it searching for something else...

This is actually not true. When I had my new summer wheels/tires mounted with the TPMS sensors in them the light went off even though the wheels/tires were in my backseat and I was driving on the snows still.

I swapped my rims recently to volks le37's without tpms sensors in it. while i drove my vehicle a bit the tpms was blinking then stayed on. a day later the light was off and never came back on. im guessing the tpms system is no longer being monitored =/

Do you park near the other wheels? Without the sensors in the wheels and parking nowhere near them the light will come on every time you drive the car. I spent all winter seeing a flashing light for a couple minutes, then on solid after that.

TPMS = Money Grab. It even says in the manual to not rely on the TPMS and check the tire pressure manually. That way they can offload the blame on you if the TPMS doesn't work.

They are generally very reliable though so I wouldn't say it's a money grab. I used to work for the biggest OEM manufacturer of them in the world, and they had a very low failure rate.
