in short, this car should only be bought by people who only do daily driving, keep it completely stock, and plan to sell it before warranty runs out.

i'm guessing not many people who buy this car fall into this category.

.

This is the biggest issue here. If these cars get a rep that they are "no good" after warranty it will kill resale, and there are a lot of people who won't be able to trade-in at the end of warranty with poor trade-in value. Toyota/Subaru will lose that coveted new customer base.

Word gets around about what I call "warranty cars." Cars that are known to have major issues after warranty, resale tanks and we all lose. I'm in the drive it till it turns to rust camp but this issue will affect all of us if it is dismissed by the OEM's.

It is one of the worst failure modes to diagnose in that there are no permanent CEL's and it doesn't start showing issues until high miles with average driving.

I don't agree with making a stink about taillights and non bankrupting type quirks. But if one's car were to develop a bad DI seal at 50k and finally the engine blow at 61k, he'd be out $8k for a new engine. The way this doesn't "throw permanent codes" for diagnosis and the possibility that it may be a cylinder head tolerance issue is down right scary. I haven't shifted past 4krpm in weeks, just isn't worth the risk. The only way to get real attention on this one is that the engine can seize, which is a safety issue.

I think Toyota handled the idle/CEL issue very well and have done a good job with warranty issues thus far, but this one is a real challenge not only because of the severity and the late to present symptoms but because of the new technology. "First Ever DI Subaru Boxer Engine."

And there was also a photo somewhere with failed injector seals from Japan.

And for instance, my taillights were also waterlogged (Europe).

I bought my car 3 weeks ago. I have never had a new car before, always have had used cars. I did a ton of searching for known issues with the fr-s and the FA20 and only came up with what I considered was minor stuff.

Now you all have me worried about my recent purchase since I had not seen this until now...

All parts related to the injector and seals are on national back order now.
I placed my order yesterday from Toyota. There are 3 different injector part numbers based on markings on the injector as well. So gonna pull it and look. I think many people will start pulling the di rail just to inspect as part of 10k mile maintenance going forward.

So, we don't have carbon buildup in our intake manifold/valves....but we do have to check our seals!

Some explicit communication from Toyota and Subaru is required on this matter.

Unless you start getting symptoms you don't have anything to worry about...

Besides, Toyota/Subaru employees claim the issue only presents itself if you're heavily modded or driving on the track...lol

i checked the subaru parts catalog and see 3 part #'s listed for the "front" injector, with descriptions of Mark 1, Mark 2 and Mark 3 (Part #'s 16611JB010, 16611JB020 and 16611JB030 respectively.)

I wonder one or two of the DI part #'s are having more issues than the other? maybe the nationwide backorder is so they can issue mark 4?

I was completely stock in my bay along with 3 other local cars that have had this issue in my area alone, none of us has seen track times either. We're all just a bunch of rich old men who drive it for fun.

I know, I was just being facetious...there is a problem...Toyota and Subaru just refuse to acknowledge it just yet

That's the same as it always is. It won't get addressed if we don't complain constantly.

Can someone explain to me if there are "driveability" issues related to the injector seals failing - before the real problems, backfires, etc.., begin?

My engine sometimes gets a bit boggy, particularly at trailing throttle, but never anything more than that.

Well, sure. Your MPG drops, your car sounds like chinese new years when you're accelerating at low RPM, and people wonder wtf is wrong with your car.
