(please pardon the tangent everyone else... with 1400+ posts in this 18 month old thread, I figure people won't mind)
Actually, no. I have never driven the Golf R since it literally just came out. I drove the GTI before while I was shopping for either the Z or GTI. I thought GTI felt very solid and comfy, better than the Z in a way. I can only imagine Golf R to be better than GTI, but again, that's just pure speculating.

I hate to say this, but Z does have a weird clutch. Some ppl might think it's crappy, but it just takes time to get used to it. The Z is not a "refined" sports car. It's very rough in a lot of way. It's noisy and it vibrates a lot, but what makes it a great car is that "you feel everything while driving".

Thanks for the impressions, though since you were "enamored with the way a GTI drives" while I found it underwhelming, I'm not optimistic that the Golf R would be my cup of tea. Will drive one when I get a chance.

Why do I say that? I was just on a track all day today with my G37S trying to catch an FR-S. Sure, I've got a 400lb weight penalty, but otherwise my car is pretty much a 370Z. It's stock minus pads and fluid. The FR-S was apparently stock minus RPF-1 wheels and sticky Nitto track tires. The track was a 2.2 mile road course with 14 turns.

Put it this way: I had to have several excellent laps (without overheating) in a row to reel in the FR-S. It was tough. I'm no pro driver, but I'm decent (only cars to pass me today were a Spec-3 944, a 911, and one Cayman S on track tires). And that said, I never passed the FR-S...I only got close once. The power difference on the straight was obvious once I had him in my sight, but as soon as the turns started again, it took work to hang with him.

Anyhow, considering the amount of modifications any car that will be constantly tracked will need, the FR-S/BRZ may be a better template to start from. A Z-type car needs too many damn coolers and duct upgrades to be constantly trackable. The FR-S seemed happy stock. You can always add power later.

Long story short, I've been eyeing the twins for a while...I test drove one a few weeks back and thought the handling was brilliant. And I'm 90% sure I'm going to trade my G and pick one up. That's one vote of confidence from a G (370Z) owner...sample size of one/for what it's worth, etc etc.
The Z is a true sports car, the G37 is a touring car. It's considerably slower than the Z in every aspect.
Sorry, but this comparison is a no go.
The 370Z is faster than the 350Z, the same can't be said for the G37 vs the G35. The G37 is actually slower than the G35.
So to say you're just wrong is an understatement, the Z is a much faster car on the track.

I can get an employee deal on one but I just don't like them. FRS and genesis better car for the money.

OK, getting a bit tired of this thread, this is how i would close it:

-FR-S: Porsche Cayman like driving feel for less than half the price.
-370Z: Porsche Cayman like performance for half the price.

You both missed the "take-away" from this. Yes, the Z is considerably lighter than a G and a much better track performer. If an admitted so-so driver in a G can catch an FRS on track wheels/tires, imagine what a Z would do.

Now you can officially /Thread.

Thats affordable for me. The 370Z, however, in the same situation, would come out at $560 a month...a retardedly high payment...
I'm with you on this...apples and oranges but I feel you get more bang for your buck in the FR-S/BRZ.

My experience and closest comparison:

In 03 I ran to the closest Nissan dealership and threw my rump in the finance box. I got 2k for my trade (08 mustang gt 5mt). Needless to say after all was said and done, I walked out with a black enthusiast model w/AT cuz they were selling so fast that was all that was left.
So life lesson learned here:
car under 30k @ 10% finance = $550/mo payment (I had 790 credit score btw)
a car that looked good and was Quick but I wouldn't "drive" cuz couldn't afford a ticket and the payment. IMO that car wasn't all that fun after a week.
and no matter how bad you want a car, don't let a finance guy bend you over!
I kept the z 6 months and traded it b/4 there was a KBB on it as to not get boned even harder.

FT-S/BRZ: way more fun to drive and a lot more "rare" in a sense, better financing options as well as no haggle price even @ msrp. And at least with a not so functional back seat you can still squeeze more than 2 people in it. I once had 3 people in my z, one in the trunk...NOT COOL.
can't compare a 6cyl to a 4cyl in a fair manor, but having owned both this blows the Z away in my book.
