Generic Turbo Usage

So just to preface; I'm not an FI guy and know very little beyond the basic concept of turbos & supercharges and what they do.

With that being said, why is no one grabbing a stock WRX turbo, which can be had for under $300, or a Lancer turbo, which seemed more expensive, and running these? I figure with it all said and done you'd be looking at around ~$1,500 for some noticeable gains. Also, IMO, these smaller turbo's would put less wear and tear on your engine internals

There is more to it than that.. a lot more.

Sure you can use one of those turbos.. but when you are spending $3k+ on charge pipes, manifold, down pipe, sensors, tune, etc.. most would rather spend a couple hundred more to use a nice turbo with more headroom instead of an old OEM one.

The turbo doesn't have to be the most expensive part of going FI, the price climbs sharply when you factor in the headers, intercooler, down pipe, BOV, piping, and all the other bits that make up a turbo kit. Not to mention the R&D costs.

I think you're looking for this:

http://www.realhomemadeturbo.com/

If you know what you're doing and not afraid of a MIG and a chopsaw, this is where you start. I've boosted 6 cars on the cheap, all proved to be very reliable too. Just don't ask any dumb questions there or they will tear off your head and shit down your neckhole.

I was very close to building my kit around subi factory fit turbos. The problem is using the subi flanges just complicates things a bit more then the universal t3 flanges. If I ever wanted to upgrade the turbo to say a gt30 you have to pay a premium to get it in subi fitment.

See here is the thing; i don't think I'd want to. Just a little boost as the car only really ever see's daily driving. Just a little more power to make the country roads here a bit more fun

Ok then it could be a good fit for you. If I still had my 08 STI turbo I probably would have used that. I ended up using a t3 flanged garrett I had instead.

I believe Crawfords kit is based around subi fitment turbos.

There is a decent selection of subi turbos from the vf48 to the td04.

id beg to differ but maybe you're right. I'm a reasonably good fabricator with 7+ years of metal working and welding background. I think if i did a lot of the work myself i could keep it below that number

It all depends on what you put into the setup, doing a basic kit with a used subi turbo and keeping the internal wastegate, could probably be done at home for under that.

the manifold I made myself, this was going to have the subi inlet flange.

I'm pretty up tight about details so those 1/2 stainless flanges are probably more money then most people want to spend on a set of flanges.

why such beefy flanges? isn't 1/4" generally acceptable? 3/8" would be good as well
